Re:The Fred. Why? - 2006/06/26 21:27
The purpose of this opening is: 1) To insult the intelligence and chess ability of the player with the White pieces. 2) To demonstrate that at lower levels of play there are not bad openings, just bad middle games. 3) To validate that chess can be humorous and fun. I had this beauty sprung on me on an OTB blitz game by a stronger player, and I spent so much time and energy trying to get at the king on f7 right away, that I eventually lost (get this) the endgame. My advice, which I will take the next time I encounter "the Fred", is to develop naturally, and only then attack the black king. And don`t spend any time whatsoever studying this opening: no one in their right mind will play it against you in tournament play. ---------
Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
