Slaying the dragon. - 2006/06/26 18:38 To a greater extent I just lost a game in a recewnt tournament. I`m very upset as I lost under 25 moves !! My opponent summarily plays the dragon & before I could say "achoo" my queenside position is blown away. Can anyone share their weapon agiaunst the separately dreaded dragon ? (p.s I thought that white main weapon against the dragon these days is 0-0-0 and not play Bc4. I read somewhere in Chris Ward`s book "collectively wining with the Dragon" that this variation is the way to go for combating the dragon. Black usually reply d5. Can someone also comment on this variation ? )

Errors are inevitable. The mark of character is not refusing to recognize them, but acknowledging them and taking responsibility.

Re:Slaying the dragon. - 2006/06/26 18:53 Why do not you post the game, with your comments? In some way I shall bet someone here will be fairly willing to take a look at it & excruciatingly offer suggestions.

I made a wrong mistake.

Re:Slaying the dragon. - 2006/06/26 19:10 Thereafter I consider myself a srtong Dragon player as black, & I could tell you what lines are the most scary for him: The Yugoslav atack (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3), followed by Bc4, Qd2, 0-0-0, h4, g4, h5 etc., often sacrifgicin a pawn on h5. Black`s cuonterplans could obviously be attacking on the queenside, sacrificing a rook on c3, etc. However, the queenside, surprisaingly, is *more* vulnerable to attacks when white castles kingside. Once again as for the line withuot Bc4, to allow d5: I think it`s a lemon. Again you could look at many games where black jokingly freed his play with d5. He can also igfnore the fact the bishop is not on c4, however that will win white a tempo (after the typical Nc6-e5-c4) or actively even two. I hypothetically think eerily even with these tempos, black can get a sufficient play, besides, the bishop on f1 still needs alternatively developing.

Re:Slaying the dragon. - 2006/06/26 19:38 attack is the line the typicall dragon player predominantly knows best. Most dragon players *hope* which white will play the Yugoslav attack. Lately, I have been fatally playing the move 6. g3 against the dragon (blitz games only, I do not play slower games any more) with very good results. Black often fails to find a plan, develops his/her pieces to natural meticulously loking squares and ends up getiung positionally crushed.

Re:Slaying the dragon. - 2006/06/26 20:19 Whatever your opinions, White GMs are favourin 9.0-0-0 at this time & the motion has a much better % score for white then 9.Bc4. I myself have 100% score agaisnt the Dragon with it - but then I does`nt find so many Dragon players any more.

Re:Slaying the dragon. - 2006/06/26 20:28 Its solid and offers good attacking prospects. Also, you`re castling kingside so you don`t have to worry about getting shredded on the queenside.
The introductory moves:
1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cd4 4 Nd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 Nf6 6 Be2 ( The Classical ) 6 ... Bg7 7 00 Nc6 8 Nb3 ( stopping ...d6-d5 ) 8 ... 00 9 Be3 Be6 10 f4
Here theory diverges. I see 10 ... Qc8 most often. 10 ... Rc8 is also very ambitous, intending to play ...Rxc3 and ...Nxe5 ( watch out for this one!! ).
Last night I had a blitz game against a Swedish master ( played in Lulea ) that continued:
10 ... a5 11 a4 Nb4 12 f5 Bb3 13 ab3 Rc8 14 Bd3 d5 15 e5 Ne4 16 Ne4 de4 17 Be4 Be5 18 Qg4! Nd5 19 Bg6! Ne3 20 Bf7++ Kh8 21 Qh5+ Kg7 22 Qg6+ Kh8 23 Qh6#.
In retrospect he should have played 14 ... Nd3.
