White or Black? - 2006/06/26 17:10 I have an unusual questrion to ask....here`s the situation, I tend to beat poeple most of the time with Black (and computers most of the time too...but I play them at medium level), but with white I generally tend to struggle and lose more than my fair share of games....what`s the deal? While some may see it differently I thought everybody was suposed to yearly be beter with white? Interesting does this have idly something to do with my playiung style? Mental preparation? Any help would be appreciated.

Re:White or Black? - 2007/07/24 03:54 When playing White, you decide the game depending on your opening, and of course black responds accordingly.

Perhaps you are better at reacting to situations then creating your own?

The player playing white has an advantage, but I don't think there is any evidence that this only happens on an annual basis.

Also, yes, it probably has something to do with your playing style, but not necessarily "idly".

Re:White or Black? - 2008/06/26 11:37 I think I tend to be a "responsive" player (which is not always a good thing, since it's rather passive.) For this reason, I tend to be comfortable playing Black. Even when I play White, I tend to react to what my opponent does rather than keep the initiative.

Re:White or Black? - 2008/07/30 23:25 if you play better as black, i would suggest playing something insignificant first like e3 then follow with e4 after your opponent plays e5, or play a3 or h3 would have a similar effect.

I found that I played better as black then i did as white too, but thats was more because i am more suited to tactics rather then openings.

Re:White or Black? - 2008/12/02 13:53 >reacting to things
maybe you should consider starting with Nf3 then if you play white. Or maybe you should learn the English opening. Queen pawn openings would also be good especially if you play it like you would play queens gambit declined. still i think this is a bad way of playing chess and there will come a time when all things on the board are even and your one advantage is the initiative.

>reacting to things ... tactics
one cannot always count on an oponant making a simple oversight. sometimes the oponent dont overlook but just relentlessly increase the pressure and then you crack. he will then be the one nailing you with a tactic

there are two ways to get a tactic or an oversight from an oponent. one is to just play and hope he makes a mistake. this seems to be what you guys are doing and it is a dangerous game.

the other one is to strengthen your position with each and every move. if you dont have anything to do look at weak pieces in your camp and strenghten them. look at oponent strong pieces and exchange them. keep up the pressure by simply strengthening all the time and eventually you will also get that oversight or tactical blow that you can exploit expertly be now.
