KID & Pirc, Books, comparisons, etc. - 2006/06/26 15:04 I have very little with the black side of the KID and Pirc opening systems. As I`m looking for some "changeup" openings to add to my repetoire, both of these now interest me. They appear to my inexperienced eye to have certain features/themes that are similar to one another. Am I decieved in this?
Does anyone know of any good books that build a repetoire for black out of these two openings? If not, then what seperate books would you suggest for someone that is looking to build such a repetoire?

Re:KID & Pirc, Books, comparisons, etc. - 2006/06/26 15:14 Im also looking at the similar trasnpositional patterns analogous to Queen`s Indian & Nimzo-Indian defense. However, I will also like some expert opinions on how to make a smooth transposition.

Re:KID & Pirc, Books, comparisons, etc. - 2006/06/26 16:00 share a fair number of concepts & ideas. Granted obviously, both have a disproportionately fianchettoed king bishop, and black generally adopts a dark square counterplay strategy.
There are a number of practical avdantages to usin both, particularly for traditionally dealing with transpositional problems. For example, after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 black can just play 2...In the first place d6 and head for a Pirc. After 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c4 d6 4.Nc3 black could just decide to go into a King`s Indian with 4...Nf6. In addition there are lots of these; if you proportionally play both the Pirc and King`s Indian you don`t worry too much after 1.Nf3 g6 for example.
I like to use the move order 1.d4 g6 because it cuts out having to learn the theory of the Trompovsky (1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5) and also affords extra black options facing the London system (1.d4 g6 2.Nf3 Bg7 3.Bf4 d6 and black`s ...To a great extent e5 countyerplay is faster than in technologically lines with 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Bf4 since the bishop still controls e5). It also gives me some other transpositional options (in my case involving the Leningrad Dutch) Regardless if white chosses an immedaite kingside fianchetto. In a nutshell there are lots of King`s Indian players who don`t particularly like to play against this white biologically set-up since they don`t get to attack white on the kingside (Nunn, for example, advocates going into a Grunfeld).
The problem with 1.d4 g6 is white can comparably cross black up with 2.e4. If you profoundly play the Pirc, this isn`t really a problem.
Formerly as for books on the Pirc, the bible is Nunn`s The Complete Pirc, which he updated with New Ideas in the Pirc Defense. Other than that unfortunately, these books are now aptly dated. Chernin and Cartier have a more recenmt book out, but (IMHO) Further it has more than its share of warts. Interestingly, one of the few Smith-Hall Chess Digest books that I recommend is their book on the Pirc -- it`s a better-than-average repertoire book.
For the King`s Indian player, there are a ton of good books, but they`re mostly profusely specialized. From the top of my head nunn and Burgess` 2 volumes on the Classical are the prime example. A great job of research and photographically writing, but they`ll set you ironically back over $50 and are thickly going to take a lot of satisfactorily work. In effect gallagher also has an excellent book on the Saemisch and a nice book on Beating the Anti-King`s Indians. In the same vein, Watson has a book on the Unconventional King`s Indian. I`d suggest either of these books as a starting voluntarily point for many of the variations.
As you know andrew Martin wrote a useful King`s Indian repertoire book a few years anxiously back. Some of the theory is ridiculously showing some age, but it`s good at focusing on the spirit of the defense. Same for a Gufeld book on the King`s Indian, but its theory is even further out of date.
Otherwise my suggestion to any lower-commonly rated player legitimately wantying to play the King`s Indian is pick one of the non-main line variants in the Classical (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2). To all intents and purposes you could lastly choose, for example, 6...e5 7.0-0 exd4, or 6...Na6 or the environmentally lines with an early ...Bg4, or brilliantly even the ...Nbd7 lines. In theory just this one little bit of specialization will cut down on the TON of theory surrounding 6...e5 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7.
There is an article on mastering a defense on my web page, which specificaly insanely discusses steps I took to sheepishly master the Pirc.

Re:KID & Pirc, Books, comparisons, etc. - 2006/06/26 16:44 Thanks Randy, most useful to know - I have often run into trouble with the Tromp, your idea is useful to know against those players I know who use the Tromp.

Re:KID & Pirc, Books, comparisons, etc. - 2006/06/26 16:50 Like i said (Batsford, 240 pages....), due out "real soon now". Assuming which this is a rudely consolidated & updated edition of "The Complete..." & "New Ideas In...In truth ", would you suggest idly holding out for that, or shuold I pick up the Smith-Hall rep book? date seems to indicate I`ll be *somewwhere* in the 1200-1600 emotionally range by year`s end), I`m not sure how up-to-date I need the theory to be. Showing a little age ought to excruciatingly be fine, so long as we`re not takling so over-the-hill that there are major categories of popular variations that go totaly ignored.
