Re:Good Opennings - 2007/06/20 18:54 what is a very good openning?

A very difficult question to answer, because it depends on your playing style and skills.

As mentioned in Rules for the opening the basic rules are:
1. Begin the game with a centre pawn.
2. Develop the minor pieces so that they influence the centre.
3. Move your king to safety
but some sub rules are mentioned in this article.

If you are a beginning or intermediate player I should suggest the Italian game, the Ruy Lopez (Spanish game) or the Scotch game. After these openings I should suggest to play some gambits.
Then you have to spent at least some time on the Sicilian and French defense.
It is better to leave the closed openings for later and start with the open ones, because it is essential to focus on tactics first.

But having said all this.
It is also a matter of playing style and taste.

Re:Good Opennings - 2007/08/07 01:35 I would suggest you start with e4 and as black probably e5. I would not start with c5 as it is very complicated and if black doesn't know his theory he could get crushed very quickly. Such openings like e4 e5 nf3 nf6 (Petroff) are very solid for black, white has to fight just to keep a slight advantage. e4 e5 nf3 nc6 bc4 (italian) or bb5 (ruy lopez) are good for white. Black has good defence against both. e4 e5 nf3 nc6 bc4 nf6 (two knights defence) white can play ng5 making black sac a pawn but with excellent play, or e4 e5 nf3 nc6 bc4 bc5 b4 (italian game evans gambit) is a nice gambit for white. Against the Ruy Lopez when I get the chance I will play the Marshall Gambit. But to play this you must also study closed Ruy Lopez if play plays Anti Marshalls such as a4 d3 or h3. Other options out there are e4 e5 nf3 nc6 bb5 a6 ba4 nf6 0-0 nxe4 (open defence) which normally leads to tactical play. No offence to the person above me but you should not play French as a person just beginning will not understand that black has to defend a long time till he gets counterplay and they may never be able to propetly utilize their light squared bishop. The Sicilian white doesn't really need to know theory and he can do fine. But if white knows good theory and black does not black is in for a bumpy ride.

Re:Good Opennings - 2007/10/05 04:03 IONASAZI, I AM JUST A BEGINNER PLAYER IN THIS FORUM OF EXPERIENCED PLAYERS, HOWEVER, I HAVE READ AND PLAYED THE SCOTCHE AND FEEL IT AT LEAST GIVES ME GOOD POSITION AS I LIKE TO ATTACK SOMEWAHAT EARLY IN THE GAME, I HAD SOME THOUGHTS IN TRYING THE CENTER COUNTERDEFENSE OR SCADANAVIAN DEFENSE, MAINLY BECAUSE MANY ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT AND THAT MIGHT GIVE ME AN EDGE

IN CLOSING, I KEEP ON READING AND TRYING VARIOUS OPENINGS, BUT LIKE THE ADVICE GIVEN YOU BY OTHER MEMBERS, IT DEPENDS ON YOUR STYLE AND SKILL OF PLAY.
BEST OF LUCK TONY

Re:Good Opennings - 2007/10/29 21:54 In addition to he openings mentioned before you may want to have a look at the Fried Liver Attack. A quick overview is given here at Chess Teaching's The Fried Liver Attack.

Another and better opening is the improved Fried Liver, often called the Lolli attack.

Re:Good Opennings - 2007/10/31 21:34 The Lolli Attack is named after Giambattista Lolli who invented this line as an improvement on the Fried Liver Attack. The Fried Liver Attack is also known as the Fegatello Attack, but in Italian this also seems to mean something like "dead as a piece of liver" and I don't know who has invented this strange name.

Update:
Michael Goeller has sent me a link to an article he has written about this Lolli Attack. The article can be found here.

Re:Good Opennings - 2007/11/01 22:26 Any Opening is Playable, but at the Highest levels the GM's don't play a lot of Lines for a good reason. That said 1 h4 was played against Karpov.
