Re:Should I Have Accepted this Draw? - 2008/07/31 00:46
I don't mean to critise your play but i went over the game to give you my opinion of what you should have played. I hope it will help you.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 d6
I would prefer taking the pawn, makes the game less complex, and you can stop blacks king from castling.
4.Nc3
[4.dxe5 Nxe5 5.Nxe5 dxe5 6.Qxd8+ Kxd8 7.Bc4 As you can see now black has to defend the pawn with his king, or wreck his pawns with be6. This would allow you time to develop another piece or castle. ; 4.Bb5 exd4 5.Nxd4 something like that to upset blacks pawn structure.]
4...Bg4 5.dxe5 dxe5 6.Qxd8+ Rxd8 7.Bg5 Rd7
be3 would have been better, bg5 seems like it is inviting f6. Having said that black's response i feel was a poor one, i think f6 followed by bb4 then nge7 then castling pretty solid for black and causes problems for white
8.Be2
bb5 would have been better, may have even won you a pawn, at the least wrecks blacks pawn structure [8.Bb5 Rd6 9.Nxe5;
8.Bb5 Bxf3 9.Bxc6 bxc6 10.gxf3 i think this is better for white, queenside ruined, open file to the king side, no pieces for black developed. ke2 looks solid enough to play allowing the rooks freedom. The only thing i would be cautious of is the knight not having many squares to go to.
10...Bb4 11.Bd2 If blacks tries to ruin your pawn structure like how you ruined his i suggest this followed by queen side castleing. then Ne2 then maybe a push on f4]
8...h6 9.Bh4 Bxf3 10.Bxf3 Nd4 11.0-0-0 Nxf3 12.gxf3
[12.Rxd7 Kxd7 13.gxf3 if black doesnt play carefully, he could be in big trouble here. A possiblity of rd1 then rd8 mate, along with the knight being able to get active on a mating attack quickly. Black still has no pieces developed!! 13...Bd6 (13...Bb4 14.Rd1+ Bd6 (14...Kc8 15.Rd8#) 15.Bg3 f6 16.f4 exf4 17.Bxf4 Ne7 18.Nb5 Or something similar but it is obvious black is in alot of trouble and is going to have a hard time holding onto the pawn) ;
12.Rxd7 Nxh4 13.Rxc7 Terrible for black, the pawns on the queenside just fall]
12...Bd6 13.Rhg1
What was the point of rhg1? it loses a tempo in my opinion. The bishop moves to block the open file. [13.Nb5 a6 14.Nxd6+ Rxd6 15.Rxd6 cxd6 16.Rd1 Kd7 17.c4 i was thinking bg3 but ke6 stops your attack, would be useful to get c4 played first. 17...Ke6 18.c5 dxc5 19.Rd8 If Black didnt take the pawn on c4 he would have lost the pawn. The rook on the back rank is well worth the pawn, as now blacks pieces are useless.]
13...g5 14.Bg3 Ne7 15.h4
h4 seems to give black everything he wants, he immediatly gets the open file. [15.Rd3 0-0 16.Nb5 a6 17.Nxd6 Rxd6 18.Bxe5 Rxd3 19.cxd3 Rd8 20.Kd2 giving white a clear advantage]
15...f6 16.hxg5 hxg5 17.Nd5 Kf7 18.Nxc7
Pretty clever, when i first saw it i was wondering what you did!
18...Rxc7 19.Rxd6 Rhc8
Ok i think a draw would be fair if you were low on time, otherwise, i would have said to play on! Your bishop is in a very unhelpful position, but you do have control of an open file and you are a pawn up. Its not enough to say you have a win but it is enough to justify playing on.
[19...Rhc8 20.c3 Rh8 (20...b5 21.Rh1 b4 22.Rh6 Ng8 23.Rh7+ Ke8 24.Rxc7 Rxc7 25.Kc2 bxc3 26.bxc3) 21.Rgd1 (21.Bxe5 bishop wasnt great where it was, might be easier to trade off for pawns 21...fxe5 22.Rxg5) 21...a5 22.Kc2]
