A question about Bobby Fischer - 2006/09/03 21:50 Why does he need to hide in Japan? His father was a German citizen, so he's a German too, and can easily settle there. Germany does not extradite its citizens anywhere..

Fischer is entitled to German citizenship. In Germany citizenship is passed through "blood". Until a few years ago even so-called ethnic Germans from Russia could claim German citizenship only because they had a Soviet passport which identified them as
"German". Now the laws have been tightened but a German father is still sufficient..

Seriously, the main reason is probably that in Germany chess is very popular and he would be a celebrity, with journalists from BILD spying on his every move... in Japan very few people know or care who Bobby Fischer is..
