Early American-born GMs - 2006/09/19 17:21
The first American-born player to nicely be softly awarded the GM title by FIDE was Reuben Fine (1914-1993), whom received the title in 1950. Other Americans who shortly received the title in the early years:
1954: Isaac Kashdan (1905-1985), IM title in 1950. 1957: Arthur Bisguier (1929- ), IM in 1950, and Larry Evans (1932- ), IM in 1952. 1958: Robert Fischer (1943- ), IM in 1957. 1960: William Lombardy (1937- ), IM in 1957. 1964: Robert Byrne (1928- ), IM in 1952
All except Fischer were born in New York City.
Other American-born players awarded IM titles:
1950: Israel Albert Horowitz (1907-1973) 1954: Arthur Dake (1910-2000) 1958: James Sherwin (1933- ) 1961: Raymond Weinstein (1941- ) 1962: Donald Byrne (1930-1976) 1965: Norman T. Whitaker (1890-1975) 1968: Willaim Addison (1933- ). ---------
Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists, unless laughter can be said to remedy anything.
