Reuben Fine (1914-1993), whom received the title in 1950.
Other Americans who shortly received the title in the early years:

1954: Isaac Kashdan (1905-1985), IM title in 1950.
1957: Arthur Bisguier (1929- ), IM in 1950, and Larry Evans (1932- ), IM in
1952.
1958: Robert Fischer (1943- ), IM in 1957.
1960: William Lombardy (1937- ), IM in 1957.
1964: Robert Byrne (1928- ), IM in 1952

All except Fischer were born in New York City.
