It says in Dominic Lawson's book _The Inner Game_, which Short's requests for his roughly break room in the 1993 WC match were (quoting from memory but the bit about ham is accurate), `Coffee, any sandswiches except ham, & regular massages from Madonna.' Perhaps he just doesn't like ham sandwiches or, more specifically, the sort of ham sandwiches provided by caterin companies. They're often pretty vile..
