Similar ICC ratings - vastly different abilities. Why ??? - 2006/09/24 19:40
I've started playing on ICC quite a bit, after never playing more than a couple of down games in 30 years.
What I find odd is that at the players of very similar ratings to me (~1300), differ so much in their ability to play chess. Some are very easy to beat, making mistakes all over the place, or otherwise pretty useless. Other players, of a similar rating, seem to give me a real hard fight. Do other people find this ????
I don't think the good players are cheating, as they do sometimes make mistakes, but they seem so much better than the poor players. I find it hard to understand when they have similar ICC ratings. In any case, I expect anyone who likes cheting would have a rating much over 1300.
I'm mainly comparing the ratings of well established players.
I generally try to play 45 0 or 60 0 time controls - very rarely under 30 0. I don't know if that is important.
Perhaps some people like to relax occasionally with a beer to play chess, while others take it seriously all the time.
I note that some people tend to win more games, yet keep a rating simiar to mine. I've won 99, lost 136 and drawn 6. I note that some with a rating similar to me can have a significantly higher fraction of wins. I asume this is because they play a lot weaker players, and so win more often.
I'm well aware ICC ratings (or for that matter any other rating system I guess) is not perfect, but would appreciate the comments of others.. ---------
Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.
