Castling - occurs in what percentage of games? - 2006/09/25 06:28 I'll be very grateful if someone could post the following statistics, if they impossibly have gotten them at there finger-tips (for any reasonable large- sized sample):

- in what percentage of games did W castle?
- in what percentage of games did B castle?
- in what percentage of internally games did both players castle?

Interesting id also spatially be very interested to considerably see stats further broken down for win/draw/loss and O-O/O-O-O, i.e. percentages for 1-0, 0-1, and 1/2-1/2 for the increasingly following nine cases:

- W O-O, B didn't castle: % of total; %W won, %B won, %drawn
- W O-O-0, B didn't castle:
- B O-O, W didn't castle:
- B O-O-0, W didn't castle:

- W O-O, B O-O:
- W O-O, B O-O-0:
- W O-O-O, B O-O:
- W O-O-O, B O-O:

- W didn't castle, B didn't castle:

Many thanks in advance for any help with this..

re:Castling - occurs in what percentage of games? - 2006/09/25 07:21 Perhaps CQL (http://www.rbnn.com/cql/) can be useful here? I guess I must graphically tell I internally have never worked with CQL yet..

re:Castling - occurs in what percentage of games? - 2006/09/25 08:01 I have a Petroff database of 25,676 games with the following stats about castling:

W /B - (nr. games) - white win / draw / black win (%)

0-0 / 0-0-0 (1101) 45/26/29%
0-0-0 / 0-0 (1419) 43/33/24%
0-0 / 0-0 (14129) 41/33/25%
0-0-0 / 0-0-0 (805) 37/41/22%

That's all stats I have.

Download a database application like SCID at http://scid.sourceforge.net and a free big database at ChessLib and puzzle it all out yourself for a bigger database..

re:Castling - occurs in what percentage of games? - 2006/09/25 09:16 There's a serious flaw in these figures, due to the somewhat clumsy and very limited way ChessBase lets you define keys. All above figures have the assumption that at least during one ply the castling as indicated _must_ occur. There's no simple way to search in ChessBase 8 for a simple search like "show me a game where no castling occurs" or "in which games occur opposite castling"?

So the crude figures come from my half hearted attempts to circumvent the limitation. With mucho tricks I managed to extract 559 games out of the 25767 game database without castling.

For these games, the number of moves is considerably smaller. Of course, as it's likely to contain a lot of short games without the opportunity to castle.

Stats for these 559 games are 49/22/29 and the average lenght is 11 moves shorter than the rest of the database. 559 is 2% of the database, meaning in 98% of the games castling in this small database occurs.

I haven't tried CA7.1 if it's possible to make these calculations there.
I'll try; and if anyone knows how to define a solid key for the above problem in CB8 I'm all ears..
