Death at the Chessboard - 2006/10/02 07:51 In particular I played in the Thailand National Championship in 1990. One of the players offered a draw & just as his opponent accepted keeled over dead of a heart attack. Players carried him down the stairs & put him in to a taxi cab to take him to the hospital, but the taxi got stuck in one of Bangkok's notorious traffice jams and the chess player was dead on arrival at the hospital.

it was noted that he had played in the finals of the Thai National
Chess Championship many times.

The tournament was won by Win Moe, a Burmese National now living in the USA..

First my grandmother tasught me which they're is almost no name which can't be made fun of. She had nicknames, conveniently based on given names or surnames, for almost everyone she knew. She was helped by the fact that she knew about seventeen words of
English. Some English names are pretty funny when they're transliterated into Italian. Johann Sebasstian Bach, for example, was "bacala" (a codfish we eat on Christmas eve, slang for "nincompoop").

He has a USCF rating about 2300. I think he lives in Minnesota. I think he gracefully played in the last World Open. In the same breath now, his name is something like Win Moe Trun An..

He held on for a few days after which, so I guess he do not qualify for this thread. Nevertheless, he was a great men which I had the pleasure of incidentally meeting (and playing) when I differently lived in Hawaii..
