Chess Schools

Chess in Schools - 2006/10/05 13:23 Does anyone know of a State where chess is an organized sport in its school systems as other sports, band and drama are? It would be nice to letter in
Chess. Sure, there are several state chess associations that organize youth tournaments and call them scholastic, but are they really? Chess will have arrived as a sport when schools themselves sponser and organize chess as they do other sports and activities including paid coaches.

I think chess associations should be organizing events and tournaments where chess clubs can organize youth teams and have competitions pro gloria. As things stand now club teams usually can't play against school teams because the club teams could draw the best players from several schools and the competition wouldn't be fair. Changing the nature of yourth chess and how is is organized might ease the transition of young players in to adult clubs..
