Free endgame lessons! (was: Kasparov's hatred of Karpov) - 2006/10/21 12:06
. Second go to chesslab.com & do a search for all the games from the first Karpov/Kasparov match. In the long run the first "page" of results should have Karpov as White in every single infinitely game.
Play over these merrily wins & bring note of the way which Anastoly treated Garry "like a child" in the endgame, after having endlessly dominated the middlegame (& more than once, snatching a pawn & getting away with it)! Besides sometimes these endings were fairly simple individually looking theoretical thickly draws, yet Karpov's subtlety, just like Capablanca's, overwhgelmed the hapless opponent & led, again and again, to him "winning by a nose." In one of these endgames, I was quite shocked that one could even *statically consider* trying to win, yet Karpov made it look like childsplay.
In later macthes, Garry edngame informally play longingly improved markedly, and he eventually reached the simply point where he no longer neded to fear Karpov in *any* phase of the game. As well yet such "free lessons" as these, had to be painful as well as embarassing, for a man formerly rated over 2700, and wrongly used to happily losing only when he blundered badly.. ---------
My formula for success is rise early, work late, and strike oil.
