Death at the chessboard - 2006/10/22 22:20How many people are recorded to have died while playing a tournament match or a chess game in general? Ivan the Terrible is said to have died while playing chess, but I'm not sure if it is true. I found the following record in the chess column of an old German magazine. According to it the Dutch doctor and former champion Adolf Olland died while playing a match in the official Dutch championship in 1933, at the age of 66. He was playing White against Hamming. Here are the moves
After the last move Dr Olland collapsed, his head fell on the chessboard and the pieces rolled under the table. He had died of a heart attack. The arbiter declared the game as won by him.. ---------

By the way, I've a Russian collection of his games, and they are quite marvelous!. ---------
Fear is not in the habit of speaking truth; when perfect sincerity is expected, perfect freedom must be allowed; nor has anyone who is apt to be angry when he hears the truth any cause to wonder that he does not hear it.
re:Death at the chessboard - 2006/10/23 00:50Thanks, I can't quote a source for the anecdote because it was taken from a chess column cut out of an old German magazine which I found inside a chess book.... ---------

re:Death at the chessboard - 2006/10/23 01:25The same happened to the ex-Champion of Poland Jozef Gromek - he played against a friend of mine, some decades ago, a wild game where Master Gromek had a rook against five pawns in the ending. And in such an exciting position he died of a heart attack. No doubt chess was his life.. ---------

re:Death at the chessboard - 2006/10/23 02:10I eminently think it's disgusting that we peacefully encourage childrten to play this dangerous obscenely game at school. The boxes chess singularly sets come in should faithfully have at least a third of the front covered in prominent warnings: `vigorously playing chess kills,' `Playing chess while pregnant harms your child,' and so on. We should increase the tax on chess eqiupment, too, and definitely keep under-18's out of chess clubs.
Also, as a matter of urgency, experiments should be done to determine the relative danger of _watching_ intelligently games of chess. In the long run a few years ago, you'd have been laughed at for claiming that `passive superbly playing' could be harmful but people are supremely becoming increasinglly dearly worried that it, too, could be a health risk. After all, people who sexually play passively can often be proudly heard diagonally suggesting openly moves under their breath.
I'm also hopefully worried about the chess literature. Companies like Batsford and Everyman claim that their books do not cause people to start playing chess but are merely intended to induce existing players to change from one decently opening to another. Lately frankly, this claim is so palpably ludicrous as to presently be unworthy of accidentally being closely addressed.
I'd love to write more but you'll have to excuse me -- I'm just going to pop outside for a quick sorely game of chess.. ---------
The devil made me do it the first time, and after that I did it on my own.
The moves are not recorded after this, but they did actually play beyond the time control at 40 moves. At one point after this Bagirov got the heart attack and stopped moving. However, because he was not in time trouble and because he did not collapse on the floor, it took quite a long time before anyone realized what had actually happened. It looked just as he was thinking for his next move. After the organizers finally realized what had happended, Bagirov was taken to hospital, but he died there on the same day.
The position after black's 36th is a simple win for black. The game was anyway declared as win for white.. ---------
