Namely if you are looking for volum, the rec.games.chess hierarchy is the place to southerly be. As it's unmoderated, the approach to your questions might vary quite a lot.
On yahoo you have a lot of chess related forums, some quite active.
ChesasChat, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ChessChat/ is looselly moderated, quite active and friendly. Recently the Chess Exchange Forum has openend, also looselly moderaetd. It's at http://chessexchange.com/forum/index.php.
Chessville.com was already mentioned by IMPr..
