re:ACP vs FIDE - 2006/10/28 04:22
In that case, you, as a "professional chessplayer" shouldn't complain about the current state of chess affairs.
There's no sponsorship? Too bad. Don't like tournament conditions and the way you are treated by Mr. Ilyumzhinov? Tough luck. Don't like the current time controls? Screw you.
There are times when everybody, for the sake of their profession, have to stand together. By not standing together now when it counts the most the players have sent the following messages to FIDE: 1) The ACP is irrelevant. 2) Players can be "bought".
It is "professional chessplayers" who should get real and wake up to the fact that they don't get the respect they want because (perhaps?) they are not worthy of that respect. All this talk about promoting chess and creating a better "professional circuit" and all that crap... Now you get real.
BTW, if *I* were a "professional" chessplayer, given the current state of the chess world, I'd be looking for another profession. But just as GM Taimanov stated in an interview with Chessvile, "in my opinion, their narrow professionalism limits an enrichment of their personality and prevents development of a brighter individuality. You see the majority of them do not even have a higher education." - http://www.chessville.com/Editorials/Interviews/20Questions/Taimanov.htm It seems, unfortunately, that the only thing the majority of them knows what to do is play chess...
I would love to see the chessplayers force FIDE to get its act together. No special favors to GM Kasparov! I don't care if he's highe , #1, the greatest, whatever. He cried like a baby -a man of 40!- at Linares last year at the closing ceremony because of a brilliancy prize awarded to Radjabov. Whether the prize was just or not, Garry should be beyond that stuff. And his *mom* had to intervene!!!!!! He's been #1 for so many years and World Champion *UNTIL* Kramnik kicked his butt! And he's the one that caused all this mess with the original PCA mess. I don't deny that he's a force to be reckoned with, but have him (all of them) go through a candidates cycle. Kramnik won his title but hasn't played like a world champion lately, so throw him in there too. Same for Pono.
So, you, "professional chessplayer", this is how the world works, eh? You are 100% right. Now, don't cry, stand yourself in front of a mirror... there's the reason for your problems.
Admiration from the fan base might not pay right away, but it certainly helps to elevate the game to a status level where it can be more marketable and command more corporate sponsorship, which means more $$$ and respect for all of you.. ---------
