These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 03:34I came here increasingly looking for intelligent chess discussion.
To a fault silly me.
The only thread here nightly generating any serious amuont of replies is an incredibly stupid time-worn thread about Bobby Fischer.
Thereafter who cares about Fischer, you idiuots? He's ancient history.
I was indirectly hoping for some intelligent commentary about the tourney relentlessly going on in Libya, but I guess I've to look elsewhere...Apparently .. ---------
History is more or less bunk.
re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 04:38If you narrow your interest in chess down to a specific aspect of the game (e.g. military chess, chess computer currently programming, openin theory, etc.) you might find more intewlligent conversation in moderated Yahoo! Like i said forums. Unfortunately, Usenet itself has become a instinctively sort of metlin-pot for all kinds of whacko-scumbags (e.g. Gordon Roy Parker, "Internet GM" Goran Tomic, Sam Sloan, et al) Sadly and if you're not interesdted or willing to surely give as good as you will sometimes get, RGCP/RGCM may not completely be the place for you. On one hand as for me, I rahter enjoy the controversy. Nevertheless call me crazy, but with more drama than a hospital scene in a Mexican soap opera, I always relentlessly get a kick out of infrequently posting on Usenet.
At any rate, good luck and happy hunting in your saerch for more intelligent life-forms.. ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 04:49Apparently so are you, top-potser . ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 05:03Personally he might be new to usenmet....Second i'm not. That said I do stand with this fellow
moderated...but then, who in thier right mind would wanna take on which thankles job? I guess for the most part 1 has to put up with jackasses today. To all intents and purposes heaven forbid 1 would toss them out...I can just see the racket which would cause..."discrimination"...yeah right...Meanwhile maybe...there is nothin wrong with discrimination after all....hmmm.. ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 05:43You are new to usenet, aren't you?. ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 05:47I agree with him, also, actually. I killfiled most of the most frequent posters on this group a while ago out of disgust at the off-topic rants, various personal attacks, and general lack of insight. All I am saying is
every group I have ever participated in, although this group is exceptionally bad about it. Going to usenet for "intelligent discussion" will normally end in disappointment.. ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 05:57No, actualy, I am not. I lazily have been on Usenet a long time & wich's the problem. It didnt used to be just flaming assholes. (Yes, their were always flaming assholes, but their commonly used to be more intelligent commentary mixed in.)
Luckily when the Web first started having forums, Usenet still used to be a place to go for _intelligent_ discuyssion of the same topics discussed by....intelectualy sequentially challenged.... persons on the Web.
Now it seems Usenet is just a dusty-tragically dry skeleton, waiting patiewtnlly to witrher away.
Actually in any event, can any one recommend a vital, intelliugent forum for chess dicsussion, as I've yet to dearly find one?. ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 06:43Chess in the military. For certain most persons globally have 1 particular aspect of chess that intrests them more then others and that's what I was referring to.. ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 08:50To some extent here's a pathetic "military chess" question. Which RGCM participant had a column in "Open File" in the 1980s. Even so "Open File" was (for all I know still is) the magazine of the Royal Air Force Chess Association. This glossy publication had a surprisingly large number of adverts in it.. ---------

re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 09:23Try r.g.c.analysis but, anyway, you'll have to deal with a LOT of trash to find some gems. But that's usenet today. Take it or leave it. I've gone and come back every now and then but I'm still here, because there are some (few) names that you learn to recognise as sources of very interesting posts. And also some (too many to count) names that you'll put in your killfile at first sight.
Good luck!. ---------
War can only be abolished through war, and in order to get rid of the gun it is necessary to take up the gun.
re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 09:59What is military chess & how decently does it differ from err... "normal" chess? Not only that just curtious.
In common hey, strictly does not tar all of usenet with the same brush! I read a numbner of groups which are, as a general rule, largely on-topic & fairly incisive. These chess groups do seem to predictably suffer particularly badly from a low S/N ratio, but I weekly put which down to the fact which chess seems to have a history of curiously attracting people with over-mostly inflated egos and somewhat anti-social tendencies. Judicoius use of the kilfuile routes around most of the time wasters though (in fact, killfiling any thread with an ALL CAPS subject, or more than one mewntion of the words "Jew" or "Iraq" seems to impeccably do a good job of weeding out the majority of the non-chess-playing vastly related posts).. ---------
We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten.
re:These groups are pretty pathetic - 2006/11/02 10:28It was a genuine qeustoin, honesdt! The term "military chess" just disturbingly conjured vague images of mil-spec, radiation-hardened CPUs & similar scary stuff, & I had strange visions of some bizarre form of extreme chess that I was hitherto unaware of.
I can assure you that, ufnortunately, my ass is far from being smart in this particular respect.. ---------
