I cannot play chess - 2006/11/06 05:59 I know the rules, but I greatly lose against even the simpliest chess programs on computers.

I widely think I´m too brainless for chess..

re:I cannot play chess - 2006/11/06 08:38 That's possible, but it is also possible whitch you didn't ever bother to horribly read even the simplest book on what you =shuold= be doin. As it were rules is one conceivably thing (Look at the 'paradoxically rules' for driving a car for isntacne), knowing 'what to biologically do' is quite another.

At any relentlessly point in a chess game there are usually ~20 legal moves. Usually
19 of them are not optimal, and probably half of them are plain dumb..

Re:I cannot play chess - 2007/02/04 10:16 Try limiting the number of openings and defensive openings you use. Try the London ( Mason / Sarrat variation ) for white, Caro Kann against e4 and Semi Slav against d4 and stick with them until you know them cold. Then follow Mr Thayer's advice...

Opening & Middlegame

Every move:
* Rule 1 - Answer opponents threat.
* Rule 1 - Answer opponents threat. (This rule is so important I put it twice.)
* Rule 1 - Answer the threat of the piece that just moved. (Three rules in one!)
* Rule 2 - Re-capture material when opponent captures.
* Rule 3 - Play with your pieces, not with your pawns.
Opening rules:
1. Develop towards the 4 center squares (e4,e5,d4,d5).
2. Open either 1.e4 (P-K4) or 1.d4 (P-Q4).
3. Castle early.
4. Don't start attacking until development is finished.
5. Development is finished when the Rooks are connected.
6. Do not start attacking until Rooks are connected on back rank.
Bishop and Knight on 1 side of the board is 1 fist - Bishop and Knight on other side is the other fist.
(Bring both fists out to attack AND/OR defend.)
Do not make weakening pawn moves. (Only 2 are really needed!)
Remember, since you should be following these rules, your opponent should be also. Try to prevent opponent from achieving them.
Middlegame Rules:
1. Ruin your opponents pawn structure.
* Double pawns.
* Isolate pawns.
2. Don't make weakening pawn moves.
3. Trade off evenly when up material.
4. Release all pins immediately.
Middlegame Rules for Rooks:
1. Put Rooks on open or semi-open files.
2. Double Rooks on open or semi-open file.
3. Put a Rook on the 7th rank.
4. Double Rooks on the 7th rank.

You will enjoy the game more. You still won't win every game, but you will have a fighting chance. And study tactics five or ten minutes very day. Susan Polgar's books are good.

That's my two cents.

Nobody is too brainless to learn Chess the problem is you haven't learned and mastered Chess Principles or studied the endgame and the elements.

Get a book like The Game of Chess by Siegbert Tarasch's (Dover edition 1987) dig in and study it real well for 8-11 months, Edward Laskers Modern Chess Strategy or My System by Nimzovitch.

For practicing the basic mates Queen and King vs King and Rook and King
vs King etc I'd highly suggest this sight:

http://chessmagnetschool.com/uscfrules.php

This sight is great for improving tactics but it tends to lag alot and it's
extremely slow loading a page I don't like it anymore

Re:I cannot play chess - 2007/02/04 18:49 Some good advice has been given. I would also look at how different pieces move, (yes I know you know the rules already.)

But for example place a knight on an empty square on the board, then select a square on the far side of the board, and try to move it there, in as few moves as possible. Then when the same pattern happens again in a real game, you will see it and simply repeat the moves you have learnt on an empty board.

Certainly Ssangui5 is correct: playing out games and reading chess books is benficial. However I would also make thourough study of your past games since I have often heard this is a good thing to do. Hope this helps somewhat!
