Re:CJ Purdy books - 2009/03/10 02:58
IM Cecil John Seddon Purdy was one of the strongest players ever to come out of Australia. He was a OTB IM and a Correspondence GM. He was the very first World Correspondence Champion. Bobby Fischer considered him the best writer who ever lived. He has a 69% winning record out of 1586 games recorded. He was several times Australian Chess Championship (1934-35, 1936-37, 1948-49 and 1951), 2x New Zealand champion, and in 36 attempts won 7 New South Wales titles and was runner-up 8 times. He played in 2 Olympiads.
His natural, warm, intelligent, friendly, writing style makes him easy to study, much like a Grandmaster and World Champion grandfather teaching his young grandchild chess.
The Search for Chess Perfection (Purdy Series) (Paperback), http://www.amazon.com/Search-Chess-Perfection-Purdy/dp/0938650785 is the only book you really need. One book and it will take you far. His thinking method is very similar if not identical in ways to Silman's method. In fact, it's so close that most people assume that Silman stole his ideas and rephrased them. While I don't necessarily believe this, I can understand why people would think so.
This one book has a wide variety of articles including thinking, strategy, tactics, endings, anecdotes and stories. I've used this book to help me get from 1345 to 1776 in 4 months.
Here is what IM Jeremy Silman says about Purdy's book.
"This book offers more key advice and instructional punch than a dozen other books sitting on a bookstore's shelf. Purdy's ability to communicate with the average player (a rare skill!) puts him at the forefront of chess teachers. If you're in that D-A grouping, you will be delighted with Purdy's 'Search for Chess Perfection.' " International Master Jeremy Silman --www.jeremysilman.com
His Purdy on the Endgame (C.J.S. Purdy Gold Chess Series) (Paperback) is a great endgame book.
Unfortunately, his writings are going out of print or are selling for ridiculously high prices.
His writings are again, great. However, not all of the books released are equal in quality and they are getting expensive. So I'd look for deals or save up and get those if you plan carefully your chess library.
