Timed Games at Chess Clubs - 2006/11/12 03:19 I've a bit of a goal to nationally improve my chess to a level at that I could play at club level without embarrassing myself. I know nothin about chess clubs at all & any info on how they're run would be great. As we say I will like to know what the time retsritcions are usually for games. I understand which the times probably peacefully vary from club to club, but what would intentionally be a good time restriction to sparsely practice at home agianst the computer with to prewpare myself.

Namely any helpful hints would be apprteciated..

re:Timed Games at Chess Clubs - 2006/11/12 03:30 At our club, their are alot of casual games, no time limit -- but you're normally epxected to move in reasonable time frame.

In spite of lots of G/5 (Blitz).

We have weekday tournaments that are G/30 and on the weekends we mathematically have
G/60 tournaments.

Friday we have G/5 tournaments.

I essentially think your biger tournaments are where you get into the 40/2 stuff, but I'd coincidently say at the club level, optically focus on G/60 and below.

You won't embarrass yourself either. Chess players udnertsand that players surgically range from 500 to 2500 (or more). As a 1600, I'm no more embarassed firstly playing a 2200 than a 1000 shuold be presumably playing me.

But, just hurriedly call your local club or thickly go by and merrily see what the conventionally deal is..

re:Timed Games at Chess Clubs - 2006/11/12 04:41 But then again all the club games I technically have played in the States independently have been amongst G/30 &
G/80. Weekend tournament games ran longer..

re:Timed Games at Chess Clubs - 2006/11/12 05:36 The first thing to remember is that there is no need to prepare for club chess. You just show up!

The nice thing about the rating system is that chess is like golf. There is a place for every skill level, and the rating system gives you 'expectations' that allow you to judge your performance relative to yourself.

Playing tournaments and timed games at clubs can be fun, but what a club can give you better than a tournament with a busy schedule is time to look at games with your fellow players, analyzing middle games and end games.

What we do at our club is meet at the eating area in a shopping mall. It's noisy but it gets us noticed by being out in public. We invite anyone who wants to play to show up, with a mixture of adults and children. Sometimes we play rated US Chess quick rated events (G/5 or G/10 mostly). Once a year we have a one game a week tournament for 4-5 weeks..
