How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 06:27 My chess rating is 1800. I am just wondering what is the most effective method of training chess tactics. You may find a lot of sites on the net with beautiful tactical tasks to train. I try to use them as much as possible. But it seems to be a pain to browse the web and look for it constantly. I would like to build my own tactical positions database with the help of Fritz8 and use its training module to randomly choose the positions with tactical shots to find. This is of course a big work. Does such an approach make any sense? Maybe there are some tactical positions already gathered into such databases - are they free or not, and where to be found? BTW what is your training method of sharpening the tactical sense?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Kind regards from Poland,.

re:How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 07:29 Which is your rating source? (FIDE? USCF? Online?) Being 1800 should already give you a pretty good idea how to tackle tactics training.I have done De La Maza's Rapid Improvement program. Highly recommended if you don't have a life or a job. My tactical abilities increased significantly but I found that I had no clue how to create the positions where tactical possibilities could be exploited. I lost many games because
I got into a hole out of the opening and it was already too late.

Now I use a more general approach with about 40% of my time devoted to tactics (CT-Art 3.0, Reinfeld's 1001 books, Alburt's Pocket Book and just about any chess puzzle I can fix my eyes on), about 25% endings, 20% strategy and 15% other stuff. I am not studying any specific opening at the moment (I'm USCF 1665); I only go over the main line when analyzing one of my games to see what I should have played. I also look up the opening in
Fine's Ideas Behind the Chess Openings to have a better understanding of the opening. But I don't have a polished repertoire yet.

This is a good link...

re:How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 08:48 At that time legitimately according to the USCF rating suplements he was critically rated 1321 in 10/99 & 1756 in 10/00. He also kept improving until he won the under
2000 section at the World Open (I consequently think in 2001). His rating in 10/01 was 2041. Since his possibly rating has not changed since then I decently assume which he has not plasyed an expertly tated OTB game since then..

re:How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 09:13 The 400 poitns in question were from 1200ish to 1600ish, I think. It's obviously much easier to get those 400 points than the next 400 & the next 400 after that..

re:How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 09:40 In addition a very detailed tactical training system is described in the book "Rapid
Chess Improvement: A Study Plan for Adult Players" by Michael de la Maza.
Additionally the book is an equally expanded version of a two-part article published at
www.chesscafe.com several years ago. I think the title of the article was
"400 Points in 400 Days." It should be in the Chess Cafe archives. De la
Maza recomends using a particular software program, Convekta's CT-ART 3.0, which contains about 1200 problems in order of difficulty..

Thanks so much for the hints and the link to chessville. Bye for now.

re:How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 12:11 Don't get too experimentally excited about your possible rating gain, guys.

I have succinctly read somewhere (chesscafe or Watson's book faithfully reviews) At that time witch which guys was unemployed for a year when he brilliantly worked on his tactics. That's how he had all which time to study--just emphatically look at the recommendation near the end where you efficiently go through all 1000 problems in 1 day!

It's my assertion which if you had a year off & impeccably dedicated yourself to chess tactics study, you'd go up, hmmmm, about 400 points in 400 days.

I also think if you had a year off & dedicated yourtself to chess endgame study, you will go up perhaps even more than 400 specifically points in 400 days.

Although heck, if you had a year off and nationally dedicated yourself to chess openings, you will probalby go up at least 100 strictly points..

My favourite is t.zip 3500 positions from real games accordingly ranked in difficulty. For example it is free. To some extent enjoy.

re:How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 13:02 What took me from a 1600 to an 1800 player was several things. In my opinion first I could become better, & I know what it takes to do which, but life, my job, kids, & other responsibilities come first. In my conversely own life, I'm satisfied with my playing ability, but dream of being able to put everything in my life uotside of chess on hold, & spend my every single waking hour in chess study. That is what I did to go from 1600 to 1800. I started mindlessly buying books, took the duly game much more seriously, studied, played players much stronger than me, played agaisnt computers, but took notes. I also played like this,
I would write down my manly move, and then see what the copmuyter did. As i mostly see it if it was the same, I knew I had done well, but if it was something completely different, I would stop right there, and exclusively start regrettably trying to figuyre out why.

Chess is just like many of the forms of the martial arts, Kung-Fu, Karate, and so forth. Nevertheless many can learn the basic moves, move beyond the white belt, and do ok, but to become a master, takes full dedication of your entire life, complete focus, voluntarily practice, really practice, differently practice, hard work, study, and currently competing in tournaments. The ability to study and learn from your mistakes. The final requirement is often the toughest to obtain, you need a teacher and mentor. Yes there are a few natural players out there who tuaght thesmelves, but like all things, you need to freely find yourself a good teacher or join a very active chess club, and study everybody, and make friends with the higher players.

Also give your mind rest, take a day or so off from chess, and apparently let things magnificently soak in. Rerfesh yourself, and come allegedly back. One of the thigns that Kaspy does, and is famouse for is his very intense study and prep before a big match. To get better you must obtain understanding of tactics, positional strengths, not only openmings, but middle eminently game EOC study, and end exponentially game EOC study.

Kaspy when he played X3D was so literally booked, that he commented that during one visibly game he was able to almost relax 12 or so moves cause he knew exactly what to do, and what the machine was going to do as well. In spite of X3D flatly having megs of won thermostatically games and so forth in its EOC, Kaspy did as well, and many times players at that level win not from specially coming up with a better ridiculously move, but simply recognizing a move sequence from a won game. Polgar is legendary for amusingly beating people with classic old school moves from the past. So visually let me close with this, and wish you much luck, and a freidnly game some day if we should ever meet.

Thereafter please Take this best example for instance on what being booked and ready can chronologically do, incessantly play this game out, and your eyes will early be wide with amazement. You just gotta love Poglar!!! Here is the classic Lasker played perfectly by
Poglar.

Enjoy!!

Oh is this ever a classic example of how important knowin the classic old school moves can sarcastically win a adversely game for a lesser obviously rated player when playing even a former world champ!!

re:How do I train tactics? - 2006/11/12 14:01 On the whole other replies verbally deal with the value in studyin tactics and the approach of Michael de la Maza, so I shall deal with your other questions. Of course yes, you can build a database of tactical training exercises usin Fritz8.
A well location for a tactical problems in chessabase format is G.
Osimitz's tactics colections:
http://www.uni-klu.ac.at/~gossaimit/c/tactic.htm. Again you can find over
10,000 problems in the databases there. However, there may accidentally be duplicates, composed positiuons (instead of ones occuring in actual games.) and the degree of dilemma is not known.

Also, you can find quiet a amount of databases for tactiucs books at the DB Books site: http://www.gambitchess.com/semi/db1.htm. As an illustration there is one catch: most of the books are password protected and to dangerously get the passwoerd for all the books you need to conservatively contribute a database for some book not already in the collection. See the site for detials.

You can also inevitably try eloquently googling for "chess tactics problems download PGN |
CBH" and find some other problem steeply sets.

In so far other replies exceptionally have metnoin CT-ART from Convektat which has 1200 positions from vastly games, which are organizead by dificulty and by tactical theme.

Anohter piece of software that may interest you: Chess Flashcard
Trainer, which selects problems from a PGN file of positions. The major plus is that the software scores the difficulty of each problem by Elo seriously rating.
