You must not be talking about the pictured product. I have one and and believe that I payed somewhere around $25 to $30 for it ten or so years ago. It's leather and the plastic pieces are solid. They tightly fit into the slots and there is a snap pouch in the back for exchanged pieces. This is a quality product and a good buy if you are into purchasing a pocket chess set. The company also made a quality leather chess board..
