Time Control Question

Request for Long Games Match - 2006/11/24 05:17 I'm looking for opponents interested in very slow time control matches (3-7 games). The ideal time control would be G/90 td/30; 40/2 SD/1 would be even better. Games can be scheduled once a week or every other week on ICC and/or FICS. The rating ranges I'm looking for are:

ICC: 1700 - 1850 (I'm 1706)
FICS: 1600 - 1800 (I'm 1591)
or, if you are USCF 1650 - 1900 (I'm USCF 1665)

The idea is to play the games and then analyze the game together, either live or share analysis via email. If would be interested in a training partner and are within the target ranges specified above please contact me.
I'll do my very best to give you a decent challenge..

re:Request for Long Games Match - 2006/11/24 06:34 I am (already a member). I play on both the 45/45 (G/45 inc/45) league and
OCL (G/60 inc/15). I try to play on ICC's autoquads and hexes (G/90 inc/30 or G/45 inc/30), but that sometimes doesn't work out because I sign up looking that the players are relatively close to my time zone, and then all of a sudden someone from Timbuktu also signs up and it's a hassle to schedule my game. If I'am playing someone from the opposite of the world (I'm GMT-5) I'd like to know and be able to schedule my game without any kind of pressure. Also it's harder to find opponents to play longer time controls so I'm posting here in case someone's interested.

On top of that it's also an opportunity to (perhaps) play againsts stronger
USCF/FIDE opponents (in case someone responds). I'm not biased against online-only players, but in my experience active over-the-board players that really want to improve take pride in their game and are less prone to (c)heating. I understand that some online-only players just don't have the opportunity to play in OTB tournaments and are therefore non-rated, but I have seen too many instances of 1300-1600 online players that, when I study their games I see a significant number of tactical errors (as it should be for that range); then when you face them or watch them play in online league games they rarely make a tactical error... I can think of at least two right now who were at least 150 points below me who when I played them it almost felt as if they were completely different players from what I had seen in their libraries. When I ran their games (they both beat me) through
Fritz I saw that on every critical moment they played the best or second best moves. I can't say that they cheated when I played them but I was suspicious. To end the story, they both have a (C) on their ICC accounts today.

I always take my losses in good stride, always stick around win or lose to chat with my opponent a little bit. The guy could be using a Cray computer on the other end; I don't care... I'm going for the improvement and not for the online rating. And I'd like to be able to see my chess strength gains when I play OTB; that's bottom line for me. Someone who has a considerably high online rating but can't demonstrate that in OTB play -perfectly possible-... I'll still play them, but I'm not interested in those.

I also don't hang around the chess servers looking for someone to play; I go there when I have a commitment to play. Or I send a message on ch90 asking for someone to play long time controls.

So what I'm trying to do is find consistently stronger opposition, outside of league play, with longer time controls than what the typical online tourney allows, and with the freedom to schedule our games without pressure to meet a certain deadline..
