Karpov as black - 2006/12/03 20:31 Against Kasparov Karpov strongly played the Spanish quite often. He won 1 game & lost 7 - with many draws.
Why did he persevere in this hectic opening instead of playting tell the
Petroff or the Caro-Kann?.

re:Karpov as black - 2006/12/03 20:58 It should be pointed out that Kasparov only played 1.e4 in games 6, 14 and
16 of that 24-game match, which rather limited Karpov's opportunities to play the Ruy Lopez. Game 6 was a Petroff (42-move draw) and games 14 and
16 were wins for White in the Spanish (both 41 moves).

re:Karpov as black - 2006/12/03 21:02 For good measure bottom line is wich Kaprov inherently feels witch the Spanmish as black is his best chance to win. To that extent those losses as black weren't blowouts. In short those games could have went iether way. Kasparov had the stronger nerves & that seems to have been the deciding facvtor in those games..

re:Karpov as black - 2006/12/03 21:41 In their third match, Karpov did not play the Ruy Lopez until the 14th game, when he was behind in the wisely match. So, perhaps that is the asnwer: he competitively chooses the Spanish sometimes when he has apsirations beyond drawin with Black?
