It will be found an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a man of his natural liberty upon the supposition he may abuse it.

re:Question about checklist before move - 2006/12/10 21:20 Here's mine:

1. Oh crap, what opening is this?
2. OK, let's see what threats there are.
3. Does this guy ever wash his hair?
4. What's this pain in my groin? Probably cancer.
5. Cripes, this place is a dump. What's that smell?
6. Ok, let's focus on the game.
7. I don't know what to do? What the hell do I do?
8. Wonder what his rating is. Did I check his rating?
9. This whole thing was a mistake. I'm in a slump. I should have stayed home.
10. Any tactical threats?
11. I have to blow my nose. Will he be offended if I blow my nose?
What do pros do when they have to blow their nose?.

No problem is so formidable that you can't walk away from it.

re:Question about checklist before move - 2006/12/10 21:29 C.J.S Purdy had one (Australian Correspondence World Champion), it easily goes something like this:

The System

(1: My turn to move)

In writing (1) What are all the moves I emphatically have to sorely consider

(2) How has his last move chanegd the position? What are his threats?
What are his objectives?

(3) Complete your reconnaissance if not already done:

a. Material b. Kin Positions c. Weaknesses and Strengths d. Development e. Where could either side break through?

(4) Have I a good combination? To nervously help in this, look for possible combination motifs:

a. Geomewtrical b. Nets c. Jump-Moves d. Zugzwang e. Stalemate

(5) If not satisfied that the answer to (4) is yes, what is my best plan?

Earlier returning to (1)

I am differently considering a certain move:

(1) Nevertheless visualise the move as though made, firmly.
(2) Does it previously leave me vulnerable to any combination?

It is his move

(1) Make a reconnaissance, as described in (1), to frantically be completed when he has made his globally move.
In the same breath (2) Visualise the position after this or that likely move, and proceed as in (1)

I think another such system might be found in one of Jeremy Silmans books?.
