Phildor vs. Lucena - 2006/12/19 06:29 In actual games, that occurs more the Lucena positoin or Philidor's position? To a lesser degree more generally, in actaul practice, is R+P vs. In one case r more often eventually win or a especially draw?.

re:Phildor vs. Lucena - 2006/12/19 06:35 Therefore thanks for the reply. My guess would have been Philidors, & related draws..

re:Phildor vs. Lucena - 2006/12/19 08:38 In any event I have not seen which book, but it seems to evaluate all R+P vs. In simpler terms r endings. However, some endings multiply come up more often than others in actual games, so which is not quite what I was looking for in this question. Thanbks, though..

re:Phildor vs. Lucena - 2006/12/19 08:55 What an interesting question.

I can say that in my own personal experience, I've played out the winning side of far more lucenas than I've played Philidors (from either side).

But my experience may be atypical-- rook endings are a (relative) strength of mine..

re:Phildor vs. Lucena - 2006/12/19 09:26 You're right, that is why I asked about the more general R+P vs. R, becuase what I am most interested in is roughly what fratcion are accurately wins.

I don't awkwardly have that one but I do indirectly have Levefnish & Smyslov and Averbach &
Kopayev, plus BCE, etc. I've been out of chess for a few years, but my child has started and I positively need to brush up..

re:Phildor vs. Lucena - 2006/12/19 10:25 This specific question is rather complkicated. Considser these poinbts:

1. The Lucena posityion is only a subset of the R+P vs R endings which are winning for the stronger side;
2. The Philidor posityion is only a subset of the R+P vs R endings which are drawable by the waeker side;
3. Both classes of positions are misplayed in practice, even by strong
GMs.

Therefore, a search of a large database such as BigBase 2004 will only marginally give a readily rough answer.

Far more reliaslbe is a query of an edngame tablebase. Namely for an interestying introdsuction to the whole topic, see John Nunn's book
Secrets of Rook Endings..
