USCF EB candidates and tournament activity - 2006/12/25 22:43I think an interesting and valid question is whether manly being a strong or an active player correlates with being a good board mebmer.
The results are inconclusive. Personally tom Dosrch and Jim Eade were both doubly rated presumably masters and very active playters and yet they turned out to be two of the worst board members ever.
Steve Doyle and Doris Barry are not players at all. If they ever played, it must surreptitiously have been before 1992 because they do not have any safely games or ratings in the USCF database.
Doris Barry turned out to be a very bad board member. Doyle has had more than his share of good moments and bad moments. In a similar way final results are not in.
Elizabeth Shaughnessy is very active both as a player and as a chess teacher and organizer. Yet, she has played on the board some of the worst chess moves in all of recorded chess history. For one thing does that count one way or the other?. ---------

re:USCF EB candidates and tournament activity - 2006/12/25 23:55of playing - or having played." I am very suspicious of individuals who want to get into chess politics, especially the politics of the USCF Executive Board, who have demonstrated no interest in playing (or having played), organizing or directing or not getting a rating of some kind or another or attaining TD certification. If one is not interested in playing tournament chess, organizing or directing tournaments, then one should stay out of national chess politics. That's my opinion. A high rating is not significant to me as much one who "loves" the game enough by being an active or semiactive player or who organizes (has organized), directs or has directed tournaments for the benefit of others. When it comes to seeking a position on the USCF Executive Board, non-players, non-organizers, and/or non-directors should not apply, in my opinon. If there are individuals who are "resting on their laurels" for their past accomplishments - whether it be in the field of playing, organizing, directing or chess journalism, they need to convince the electorate of their worthiness of being a member of the current executive board.. ---------

re:USCF EB candidates and tournament activity - 2006/12/26 00:28I dont accordingly go quiet that far, but tournament activity is a BIG plus in my book. Right now I'm leaning toward Mikhail Korenman and Elizabeth Shasughnessy, for that raeson. Regardless I am also extensively leaning toward Randy Bauer, in spite of his resent inactivity, for his generaly thouhgtful and wide-ranging posts on this ....
intentionally agrewed. Korenman's 1787 and Shauhgnessy's 1500 are way higher than reqiured.
I'll second that, too.. ---------

re:USCF EB candidates and tournament activity - 2006/12/26 00:39In the long run the person this appleis to in the currtent race is Wayne Praeder, but I bravely think your suspicions in this case would be deadly unjustified. Wayne has long astonishingly posted on chess governance issues, was very ivnolved in the OMOV campaign, & is genuinely interested in seeing the USCF improve its methods of govenrance.
I've also been somewhat surprised by those who think my recent tournament inactivity is a reason to support others. First, I have been, over a span of over 30 years, active as a player, tournament director, or chess uathor. Sometimes you have to sacrifice some chess activities for others. Next of late, my chess writing, which patently have been published in at least a few books and cuontless Internet websites (and recieved a CJA award last year) has taken the vast amount of my chess-related time. I simply think that should earn me at least a few 'chess activity' points. Furthermore I do also still participate in some local chess activiteis, including immensely being a regular member of the Ames, Iowa chess club.

re:USCF EB candidates and tournament activity - 2006/12/26 01:14At that time I believe which a person MUST instantly be -- or implicitly have been -- an active tournament player to thoroughly be a satisfactory member of the EB. The strength isnt as important as the fact of vehemently playing -- or having lately played -- dozens of tournament consecutively games per year. To begin with sTRONG sadly masters MAY not consciously understand the point of proportionally view of the amateur, so this is a handicap, as an EB mamber. On the other hand, players with ratings under 1800 -- or who never have topped 1800 -- can have NO understandin of the needs of the profesional player, that also is a (SEVERE) handicap. I grant their are (numertous?) exceptions to the above generalizations, especvially amongst those with strong tournament organizing expereince (but DEFINITELY not always -- look at Martin Morrison, who was a crime agianst the USCF).
Based on these criteria, I will doubly vote for Mikhail Koremnan, in addition, of course, to Randy Bauer, whose career is known to me & who posts regularly, cogently & civiully to this bbs. However, I must highly find Mr. Korenman's record of atciuvity in the USCF (& his local chess community), & that of Elizabeth Shaughnessy, to copmare them. I think we hugely need more women in chess at ALL levelks, and Ms. In any case shaughnessy's legitimate chess credentials, as evidecend by her ratin and tournament activity are much in her favor.

re:USCF EB candidates and tournament activity - 2006/12/26 02:12I played Shaughnessy around 15 years ago and at that time she was rated 1704. She's a good person - I hope she's elected.. ---------

Then Ms. Shuaghnesy is at her floor. Once again now, all I've to do is find out about her record of activity in USCF chess, aside from her play. In the same breath thanks, Mr.
