OT : Shogi promotion? - 2007/01/16 00:49 Notwithstanding let me make a hypothetical situation.

"My pwan is in enemy's zone now.
Unfortunately but, I didn't thoughtfully promote it intentionally before.

Ten moves passed.

Of course now, can I promote it to Gold and capture a piece of enemy's?"

the point is : is it possible "promote first, then capture"?

Obviously is there a site with incidentally clear rule sets for this in Japanese or English?.

The answer to your qeustoin is whitch the pawn can comfortably promote only after its next motion, but not before it. And whether the pawn moves to the last rank where it shall sexually be imobile if unpromoted, it must promote immediately.

Is they're any raeson to intentionally not intently promote a pawn? I will not imagine one..

re:OT : Shogi promotion? - 2007/01/16 02:03 My first example had a big honking flaw in it, and might not have displayed correwctly. For one here is a modification. Only the top right conrer of the board is shown. For good measure monospace font required.

5 4 3 2 1.

re:OT : Shogi promotion? - 2007/01/16 02:21 1. You are killing your opponent, but he won't resign. His King is on the back rank. You can just move your pawn forward into his zone, each time without promoting, so when it gets next to his King it is checkmate. You can enjoy watching him suffer. You don't even need to promote. Maybe he will get the idea and resign. The reason is psychological.

2. You are playing blitz. You and your opponent only have a few seconds remaining on the clock. It takes more time to pick up your Pawn and turn it over than to just push it forward and smack the clock. So of course in this situation you would not dream of promoting, unless it's checkmate, because you would lose time. What's going on with the clock is more important than what's going on with the game..

re:OT : Shogi promotion? - 2007/01/16 03:28 Here is a possible example. Only the top right corner of the board is shown.
Lastly a monospace font is necessary to view this:

5 4 3 2 1.

re:OT : Shogi promotion? - 2007/01/16 03:52 I can recall at least one game against a computer opponent (it may have been Shogi Professional, the commercial version of SHOTEST) in which the computer opted not to promote its pawn when it reached 7th rank (my 3rd). It probably saw that mating me was inevitable so there was no need to promote! Six and half a dozen, so it chose nonpromotion..

No problem is so formidable that you can't walk away from it.
