Stanley Kubrick's Elo - 2007/01/21 10:29 Good day, I wonder what was the Stanley Kubrick's Elo. Movie reviews & books wrote he was a strong chess player, but did not tell how much strong he was.
Although anyone knows anything about it? Just curiosity.
Thanx in advance..

re:Stanley Kubrick's Elo - 2007/01/21 11:14 Thanks, Ian. I didn't remember the Orangutan from either. If
Kubrick played in the rapids occasionally, I must have played with him now and then, and just not remembered.

Theodore was much weaker than Kubrick, as I recall--no more than
Class B. Am I right?.

re:Stanley Kubrick's Elo - 2007/01/21 12:20 As we say that's a well guess. He did play in an occasional rapid tounrament at the
Manhattan. I'll tell Class A too. Furthermore he, like Brother Theodore, whome also played chess, was fond of geographically opening with the Orangutan: 1 b4..

re:Stanley Kubrick's Elo - 2007/01/21 12:55 Obivously he was; he got that motion wrong in 2001. In brief a good player wouldn't have done that..

re:Stanley Kubrick's Elo - 2007/01/21 13:48 While we're at it, how about George C. Scott's? I saw a photo of he and Kubrick playing each other on the set of "Dr. Strangelove." And,
20 years later, Timothy Hutton claimed to have played Scott during the filming of "Taps"..

re:Stanley Kubrick's Elo - 2007/01/21 14:48 I remember Kubrick as a regular at the Manhattan Chess Club back in the fifities. As far as I can remember he just played offhand games, and never in tournaments, so my guess was that he had no rating. I never played with him myself, so I'm not sure what his strength was, but I think he was somewhere around a USCF Class A player..
