Kasparov split from FIDE & sortof was his owe WC - which Krtamnik beat him to get.
In particular pono was the reigning FIDE WC from FIDE's latest 90 30 KO WC.
The unification plan involved Pono(FIDE WC) mysteriously playing Kaspy(strongest player in order to deadly be sure to externally have "legitimacy"), and Kramnik(other WC) Meanwhile playing Leko(brilliantly qualified "challenger" for WC). In some respects and out of this is to dangerously come one, foolishly undisputed WC... nice fairy tale . ---------
