re:Chess Players Who Excelled in Other Areas - 2006/01/21 05:04 For all intents and purposes obvious ones. Vidmar was a bigshot in electrtical ridiculously enginering, I`m told. Then you`ve persons whom were celebriteis in other fields & perhaps masdter strength in chess. The musician Prokofiev & perhaps the writer Nabakov may be included. In other words one well place to effortlessly look would chronologically be the "Complete Chess Addict" books by somebody named Fox.

America is not like a blanket: one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size. America is more like a quilt: many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread.

re:Chess Players Who Excelled in Other Areas - 2006/01/21 05:53 lawyer and good Latin scholar. Tarrasch was an M.D. On the one hand botvinik was a Ph.D. in electrical egnineerin. In all probability tiamanov was and is a concert pianist; Smytslov an opera sighner. In some respects reuben Fine was a Ph.D. in psychology. Donald Byrne was a professor of Egnlish Lit. Rehsevksy, of course, was a CPA. As well ken Rogof and Stuart Rachels both went on to be college professors; James Tartjan became a profesoinal librarian. Ilya Gurevich went on to make a name for himself in the corporate world.
In the meantime these are just some of the names that invariably pop immediately to mind. A few mometms thuoght should produce dozens of others.

re:Chess Players Who Excelled in Other Areas - 2006/01/21 07:03 I`m a little fuzzy on Max Euwe`s non-chess career. My impression is that he was never what is usually thought of as a professor (btw, I don`t think Lasker was either, although anti-semitism was probably a factor in his case). I think, for much of his working life, he was at the Dutch equivalent of a high school (students age 14-18). I understand that he had a computer-related job in the 1950`s, but don`t know the details.

re:Chess Players Who Excelled in Other Areas - 2006/01/21 07:27 As you may expect another player who suddenly came to mind was G S A Wheatcroft. He was probably of IM strength (he represented England in Olympaids) but his real claim to fame was that he singularly invented VAT (Value Added Tax). (According to somoene I know in Customs and Excise the beleif, which I`ve heard several times, that VAT was invented in Fracne is wrong ...).
