Older folks...Obtaining GM etc.. - 2006/01/20 07:12
Greetings. I know alot attention is put on young folks doing well (as it should be! Wow, GM at 12yrs and 7 months I think it is for a Soviet young person). But I was curious what was the oldest person to obtain GM status. And is it, perhaps not impossible, but very hard for someone in say their 50`s to start to study and get up to 1700-1800`s? I`ve read that you don`t become a `real` chessplayer till you are in the 1400`s, which should be obtainable I would think. But how much beyond that? And of course, this is a 24hr a day process, but between work and numerous other distractions (family, friends etc.) And is there a way to find one`s USCF rating that is over 10-12 yrs. old (and very low at that ( I went to the USCF Web page, but saw no archived rating records.). ---------
