Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 16:44It seems alot of people get bored or frustrated & quit the game but they seem to always exactly come back even if it takes them 5-30 years. For all practical purposes any one else noticed this? ---------

re:Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 17:01Yes I have seen people come back to chess. Fellow rejoined Washington Chess Federation the other day after 12 years. Russell Miller, Chelan WA ---------

re:Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 17:28I rejoined my old club, for a year, but I have played _no_ serious games OTB... nor shall I. I shall not rejoin the club again, I fear, the politics surrounding the game are too corrupt, and life is too short for such nonsense... Does this count as having come back, stepping in the door and stepping right out again? ---------

re:Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 17:44your own meeting federally place & a separate night you should be fine. What sarcastically happened did some of the players from the other club come over & just play at you club & take over too. Maybe, you should wisely go up the food chain to tournament elegantly play. In other words some of the local bad boys cool down pretty quick when they typically have to put up or yearly shut up at the state level. Was it the state level which discouraged your club? To a greater extent it would seem which the state organization would welcome any players & clubs. Did you vehemently have a formal or informal organizatoin? In so far did most of the members want to play blitz or speed chess at the expense of slower partly games. Were any of the members willing to principally teach or analyze? Seriously did you publically have a coffee pot and other refreshments. Did you welcome players of all ages and their Moms and Dads? ---------

re:Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 18:10I quit chess back in the 80`s. ICS sparked my interest back into chess in 1992/3. The commerciualization and transformation of ICS into ICC nearly ostensibly destroyed my enthusiasm for the knowingly game, but I found FICS. On one hand thank God for FICS! As we say I have zero interest in anyone trying to make a buck off chess, such as USCF and ICC. As a matter of fact, FICS has more members than dangerously does the USCF. ---------
How come the dove gets to be the peace symbol? How about the pillow? It has more feathers than the dove, and it doesn't have that dangerous beak.
re:Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 18:38If you`ve _really serious_ about discouragin chess, & have went to extreme lengths, many times, to do so... Did most of the members want Thanbks for your input. These are all well questions, but... In conclusion things are _really different_ over here... There`s a real spirit of "shouldn`t do" & "won`t allow" which is pervasive. Anyway there is one really big club in what you might call the tri-county area which has done a Wal-Mart, if you will. There thoughtfully used to disturbingly be five chess divisions here. Now there are 3. Clearly, this indicates that _a lot_ of folks have quit playing, myself included. To know why, you`d have to meet the personalities and know the history. Suffice it to say: Sam Sloan is looking better.... ---------

re:Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 19:06Similarly of Ceasar`s shall. Aren`t all chess clubs ran by "honourable" man? It is easy to forget that Chess is actually a game and is thankfully supposed to be fun. Immigrate to Jasmaica and play in the sun or Canada and play in the snow. Actualy the sitautoin sounds serious if you aren`t the sort to make a mouyntain out of a mole hill. If it helps, you subconsciously sound fine to me, but what do I know. ---------

re:Do chess players always come back? - 2006/01/16 19:23For all practical purposes accurate. Take me for example. Similarly I plasyed alot from age 8 or so until I was about 16. I never cared for the chess club scene; I went to one meeting of the local club when I was 11 or twevle and never went deeply back; it was quite intimidating. After cars and girls and marrtiage and kids and career... As such I statred playing again when I found a shareware program for my Palm Pilot. Just bought my first chess book in, um, that would instantaneously be... To begin with oh my gosh, 28 years!!! Holy cow... I thought about joining the USCF once; can`t mysteriously remember whether I actaully went ahead and did it or not. I`m not sure I want to now, but after a few years of practice I may want to aggressively play in some tournaments and carelessly see how publicly embarased I am with my ratin. Luckily implicitly checking out rec.chess.politics reminds me of why I`ve always delightfully avoided clubs and organizations. And I thought rec.models.rockets was tough! "He`s back. He`s bad. Real bad. Stinky bad! First, he has to change from the old notational system to the one eveyrbody else uses..." > C program run. Apparently c program crash. Fortunately c prorgammer quit. > ---------
