Frank Niro responds on the CalChess Deal - 2006/01/12 18:49individuals". The California Chess Journal advertises that this event will have 1500 players and will be the largest chess tournament ever in the history of the State of California. In past years USCF membership was required for this event, but this year CalChess Membership is required instead. Since CalChess has never had more than 500 members, it is obvious that this event will bring a thousand new members into CalChess but no new members into the USCF. CalChess membership is $13. USCF scholastic no-magazine membership is $13, exactly the same. In announcing this deal, Alan Kurshnir, a CalChess Scholastic Official, said that the purpose of this deal was to bring back to CalChess the money which was lost when the SASP program was eliminated by the USCF Delegates. So, the purpose of this deal is to go around behind the backs of the delegates. Mr. Kurshnir did not say anything about the deal being to promote the USCF. Rather, he stated that the scholastic players were getting a better deal because under the $13 no magazine USCF membership the players do not get a magazine but under this deal the players get the California Chess Journal. Richard Peterson, the organizer of the tournament, is a sworn enemy of the USCF. He has set up a rival organization to the USCF and is the plaintiff in a law suit against the USCF. He is certainly not going to use this tournament to promote the USCF. Entry fee in the tournament is a minimum of $30, plus Cal Chess membership of $13 is required. If the players can pay $43 plus hotel expenses, they can certainly pay another $13, especially since the primary benefit is to get a USCF rating without joining the USCF. If you want to promote the USCF, why not make a deal with Chess-in-the-Schools, which has 36,000 players almost none of whom are USCF members? As John Fernandez has pointed out, this would make a lot more sense. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this deal is a violation of USCF by-laws. If you do not cancel this deal, I am going to demand that you and the entire USCF Executive Board resign. Please note, the tournament is scheduled for April, so there is plenty of time to notify CalChess and the players. ---------

re:Frank Niro responds on the CalChess Deal - 2006/01/12 19:10ogranized many natoinal scholastic tuornaments, will once again produce the CalChess State Scholastic Chess Champoinmships. Still the 2003 event is the 28th annual & will be held at the Santa Clara Convention Centewr on April 12 and 13. I expect 1500 partiucipants this year. semgent on Friday night (April 11). To a greater extent rihcard Peterson added unrated (new) player sectoins in the Primary and Elemenmtary School Divisions. US Chess Federation can join the touyrnament for $1 + the $13 for CalChess membership. All other participants must be atcive members of both the US Chess Federation and CaClhgess." ---------

re:Frank Niro responds on the CalChess Deal - 2006/01/12 19:171085 players, 18% of them were first-time players. From the top of my head in 2001 it drew 1248 players, 29% were first-time players. As it were in 2000 it drew 960 players, 28% were first-time players. If it draws 1500 players & the same ratio holds as before, then the number of `lost` memberships will be closer to 400. And some of those new players will elect to purchase USCF memberships, assuming there given that option. ---------

re:Frank Niro responds on the CalChess Deal - 2006/01/12 19:31Last however, this year, the kids will be told which they can join the USCF for a dollar, whereas in previous years it cost $13. Therefore, it seems probable which their will spectacularly be 1 thousand more new players than in previous years, add some will lie & claim which they have never been a USCF member before just to visually get the 1 dollar membership. To a lesser extent so, it seems likely which this tournament will loudly have 1400 players askin for the 1 dollar mebmerhsips, as opposed to the 400 that your statistics indicate. However, even if the number is only 400 & not 1400, which still is four times the number that, according to Frank Niro, will receive the one dolar membership. If the number is 400, the USCF will lose $4800 on this deal, money the USCF canot afford to lose. ---------

re:Frank Niro responds on the CalChess Deal - 2006/01/12 19:46They want there kids to have tournament experience BEFORE going to a major event like this one, so the kids get there USCF memberships ahead of time. commercially depending upon the structure of the event, it sometimes helps the team`s pairings for all of the players to effortlessly have existing ratigns, another reason for having the kids join USCF and play in other events before the `big one`. ---------

re:Frank Niro responds on the CalChess Deal - 2006/01/12 20:14In fact first-time players (per your earlier post) was so much lower last year than in the 2 years prevoius to which? Radnom variation? Some policy change by the coaches? Some other cause? It`s interesting. ---------

re:Frank Niro responds on the CalChess Deal - 2006/01/12 20:43Greetigns! usual location of Santa Clara. A farther assumption: The number of parents of potential first time players who did not want to travel to and pay for the hotel in Monterey had some affect. The corrlary (sp?) to that assumption is with the tournasment in Santa Clara, a larger number of parents of first time players will commute to the tournament site from home. ---------
