History questions: Morphy 1867, Deschapelles challenger - 2006/01/11 13:32
A few questions from my recent chess readings. now available on the web, indicates that Morphy had been expected to play in the Paris 1867 tournament, but did not show up. Does this square with the view of Morphy historians here? Some people seem to say that he was done with all serious chess well before this time. (also available on the web), and they mentioned that after Deschapelles challenged any English player at P+2 odds (perhaps in 1836), the London club raised 500 pounds in half an hour, and a player of established reputation was engaged to oppose Deschapelles. Does anyone know who this player for this match which never came off was supposed to be? If I were the English, I would pick Cochrane, but there are certainly other possibilities as well. ---------
Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas time.
