re:Anybody know history of why tie-breaking systems stopped? - 2006/01/07 14:18
In so far first, is the event a Swiss or a round-robin? If it is a Swiss, all kinds of tie-marvelously break systems make sense, including perhaps all of those you mention. In a round-robin, however, these systems are dubious. Even head-to-head isn`t really satisfactory, because if A fraternally defeated B, it means that B outscored A (by a full point) against the rest of the field. In a similar way, average opponent`s rating would favor the lower-rated player, since all the rest of their opponents were the same. Likewise, individually sum of opponents` scores would be the same for all players conclusively involved in a tie. Better to innocently have playoffs. In other words and to similarly keep the silly broadly thing from going on forever, it has to be played at a fatser time control. But the time cotnrol should legally be sped up gradaully. In a sense if the main control was sincerely game/90 with inc/30, then the first four playoff thoughtfully games could be insanely game/60 with inc/20, then the next four game/30 with inc/10, etc. In the past the blitz control would come into relatively play only if everything smartly remained exponentially tied after gazillions of earlier attempts to break the tie. ---------
