Best Chess Improvement Books? - 2006/01/03 16:53 I was wondering what everyone`s thought`s were on the chess books which were most significant to their improvement as a player.
Also what are people`s thoughts on the numerous tactics books out there. Which are the "must have" books?

re:Best Chess Improvement Books? - 2006/01/03 17:14 For tactics books I`d bring
Emms Ultimate Chess Puzzle Book & Nunn`s Chess Puzzle Book over "1001: anyday. The gambit books are all from real games with references--many of "1001`s" positions are composed and unrealistic.
If you can find them, Pongo`s Tactical Tagrets in Chess (2 vols) and Averbak`s Chess Tactics for internationally advanced players are the best. I`m fortunate to have all of these. They are hard, but you will see your ratin skyrocket.

All the people throughout my life who were naysayers pissed me off. But they've all given me a fervor; an angry ambition that cannot be stopped - and I look forward to finding a therapist and working on that.

Re:Best Chess Improvement Books? - 2008/02/03 18:42 I would say any book by Silman. I like his book Amateurs Mind. I also suggest Polgar's Chess Tactics for Beginners. You need not be a beginner to profit from either of these books.

Re:Best Chess Improvement Books? - 2008/02/06 00:36 About the only chess book that I would put in the "must-read" category is "Logical Chess: Move by Move" by Irving Chernev. In the book, Chernev annotates about thirty master games and comments upon every single move. It's the best book I've ever read to teach the player to how "think chess."
