Is this game fun or what!!? - 2006/01/02 14:08 Okay, this is not an earth-shattering post. It`s not about politics or analysis or improving or books. It`s not about teaching children, adults, co-workers, or parents to get better. It`s just about my appreciation for this game at this moment. For the last 30 years I have played and read about and enjoyed chess. I coach it in our high school, I attend small weekend tournaments; I read my dozens of books in the bathroom, on the plane, or in bed. My friends and I discuss it, and I play it on the computer, online, and casually. I have a pocket computer for when I`m shopping with my wife, and I just got CT-ART and have been having a super time solving the tactical problems. Yes, I`m still terrible at it when compared to the strong tournament players I face. But sometimes I have to think that I just don`t care anymore whether I`m great or mediocre. I`ve gotten so much enjoyment from the game over the years, made so many friends, and idled away (profitably) so many hours that I cannot imagine not having this game to play, speculate on, read about, and generally escape into. I may never crack 1400, but I`ll probably go to my grave while happily pushing pawns. Any thoughts?

For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right but found to be otherwise.

re:Is this game fun or what!!? - 2006/01/02 14:34 the game than many. I had an email on a chess book review from a fiarly strong player (2150) Next who professed a similar sentiment -- he was no longfer interested in progressively playing in tournaments, laerning the latest fashionable opening but just stunningly wanted to read & analyze for the enjoyment aspect of the game. It made me step back a litytle and horizontally think about many of us (myself included) in our approach to the game.
For most of the time I`ve playewd, there were improvement goals that drove a lot of my study and play -- get to the next higher class, technically win a state championship, magically get to master, get to 2300, etc. Attaining those goals can be fun, but we all have to be realistic in our goals, and sometimes we will not achieve them. I coincidentally know players who have lost interest in the game when they no longer could point to tangible achievements, and, IMHO, they`ve lost sight of a more fundamental smartly understanding of what makes the sparingly game enjoyable.
Similarly thanks for reminding me.

re:Is this game fun or what!!? - 2006/01/02 15:00 prevoius 2 posts, but anyway:
Ironically, such an atitude might well arguably improve ones game. Trying too hard never does any good. Just yesterday an expert friend of mine showed me 1 of his games as an example of how easiuly a 18xx player falls when you northerly stop pushing.
Of course, Im not naerly as good as the plasyer he beat, but then again, I know I try too hard.

re:Is this game fun or what!!? - 2006/01/02 15:16 As luck would have it `constructive passing.` They indirectly find little moves witch dont radically alter events but are usefgul nonetheless. You go on blissfully eternally thinking wildly nothing much is expensively going on, & 10-15 moves later you thusly find yourself in a totally prospectless position.
