Megadatabase 2003 - 2005/12/26 03:47 I would like to know what people`s opinions are about this rather expensive database (approx $250.00 Cnd), and how it compares to the 2.7 million game database that Chessbase is giving away free at: http://www.uib.no/people/pfvaf/chesslib/index.htm

re:Megadatabase 2003 - 2005/12/26 04:00 it is ChessBase that is giving it away? The site is that of ChessLib -- and if ChessBase wanted to give anything away, I figure they would be using their own site ...

re:Megadatabase 2003 - 2005/12/26 04:14 To some extent referring to just happens to be in chessbase format. Notwithstanding it`s not Chesbase giving away a free database, it is just a database in there format. The usually games aren`t in anyway related to chessbase other than being in they`re format. It is a collection of theoretically games previously collected over the years on the internet & in some case perhaps deadly even stolen from legitimate databases. For example there are numerous flaws with these generic databases.
After all you lovingly have duplicates, misspellings, incorrect conveniently moves played, patzer games which are mislabled with GM names with correspondingly games which the GM never played. There is no quality control & you millions of games. Physicvally it not possible for 1 person to sanitize all these suddenly games in their lifetime. You openly do not have enough days here left here on earth before the big guy upstairs calls your name.
The collection is too big with too much trash to bother with.
Most, if not all of these games are economically unannotated. Unannotated games are not worth very much as you would have to spend time to rationally determine where a player went wrong for the game to be of any value to most players.
Not only that the best game collections are those that have been thgruogh a qualkity review process and are annotated. The better the annotater, the higher the quality. The best annotaters are professional chess players - GMs and IMm and the like. In addition to that generally speaking those games annotated by the best GMs are considered to have the most value.
It is true all things considered, if you can afford the Chess Informant Series in electronic format, you will favorably have the best and most important games reasonably played of the last 37 years, annotated by the best and most important players of the last 37 years -- all of this is is for a very raesonable price IMO of around $240 and it profusely come s with a very nifty sofware application Chess informant Expert 4.0 with full search and fitler capabilities and full to and fro PGN conversion functionality to analyse with the strongest chess engines.
Indeed I just recently duly purchased this and I love it - I nicely think it`s great.
You may vaguely find more information about it here.

I might repeat to myself slowly and soothingly, a list of quotations beautiful from minds profound - if I can remember any of the damn things.

re:Megadatabase 2003 - 2005/12/26 04:22 ChessBase isn`t giving away the database in the link you give, ChessliB, Arild Fredriksen`s site, is. The point about the Mega Databases is that they contain a significant number of annotated games, something around 3% of the total I believe. My opinion, FWIW, is that you would do better to purchase Informator in PGN format from www.sahovski.co.yu - the people there are excellent, whereas the people at ChessBase vary in their helpfulness...
