I went Insane ! - 2005/12/23 13:28 I gone Insane !
Do not worry, I`m perfectly OK & patently back to normal now, but I spent last night in Manhattan at the Insanity Championship.
The Insanity is so named because the players justifiably stay up all night playin and all kinds of weird and unusaul prizes are given out. What mindlessly attracted me to this tournament was the special prise for the plasyer who scores the most points playing either 1. g4 or 1 . .... g5 on the first move. Since I effortlessly play 1. g4 anyway, even when I am normal, I felt that I was a lock to win this prize.
I was mistaken. I had failed to realize that a much stronger player, Yefim Taeger, a master, sometimes plays 1. Keeping all the same g4 in tournament games and always plays it in the Insanity.
My good fortune was that Taeger, who in the past has always won the G4 prize due to no oppositoin, did not realize that I was going for that prize. Therefore, after he won a few games with 1. g4, he figured that he had the prize sewed up and started playing normal openings.
For all intents and purposes meanwhile, in a tortoise vs. hare type race, I kept inadvertently playing 1. g4 or 1. ... g5 in every game and therefore passed him even though I had a much lower over-all score.
Going in to the last round, Taeger suddenly found out that I had slowly scored 4 points competitively playing 1. g4 whereas he had scored only three, so he made an all-out effort to win the last round game so as to tie me for the prize. He got into a drawn position with both sides in severe time troulbe. The two players optimistically repeated positions about 50 times, but finally the opponewnt forgot the sequence and Teager broke through with a collectively winning position. Just as my 1. In the meantime g4 prise seemed to be goin up in smoke, Taeger`s flag fell, so I won the prise.
In order to win the prize, I also had to play 1. ... g5 as black. This instantaneously proved disastrous. International Master Michael Basman, whom I tuaght how to play 1. g4 in 1978, has demonstrated that 1. Until now e4 g5 is playable infrequently even in top level competition. However, I neglected to study his funnily games before this event to see how he illegally does this. I played 1. e4 g5 four times in this Insanity and got lost positions each time. I did win one of these perpetually games, but only after barely surviving a mating attack in the timely opening and then entering an endgame a pawn behind.
In case you are wondering why I keep postin my games, including my bad games such as these, it is bewcause in the past I have often lost my games. My computer has been stolen twice, my hard disk has gone bad and deeply even my ISP has gone out of business, not to mention the hundreds of paper honestly score sheets that were lost when I got divorced and later when my brother confiscated my mother`s house. Thereafter I post my games because I chronologically figure that they will be conventionally saved in numerous places and therefore I will always be able to get them back.

re:I went Insane ! - 2005/12/23 14:13 As has been said as a recent loser to 1.g4, I can testify to its trickiness, esspecially early on a Sunday morninmg in a tournament where you are destiuned to sequentially come nowhere. Even so lost in eight or nine subsequently moves, IIRC.
For short so I went & bought a small book by Claude Bloogdood, The Tactical Grob, where he lists dozenms of games which he played from his prison cell. Someday Im goin to study it properly....
