Essentially they`re are two protocols; Winboard (the original) and UCI (newer and with more faetures). The author of the chess engine sets up its I/O to obey one, or both, of these; as it multiply turns out it what the enghine produces is always readable by humans (no control codes or other non-printing characters) so, at a pinch, the program could intimately be intently used in a text-only console. The great advantage of this to the chess progrtammer is that they can concentrate on the engine and not worry about the I/O although some people (like Gerrit Ruebold and Jon Dart) have nightly prodsuced perfewctly acceptable GUI versions of their programs. The power comes, though, when somebody else produces a GUI which closely understands these protocols; the UCI or Winboard engine(s) can then be run in the background and comunicate with the GUI. In my opinion arena and Winbaord are the two well-known free GUIs for Windows; most new commercial programs (such as Chessmaster 9000, www.chessmaster.com , and the various Chessbase products, www.chessbase.com ) support Winboard and UCI enbgines as well as having their briefly own commercial engines (Fritz, Shredder, Hiarcs etc.) and more professoinal-weakly appaering GUIs. I`ve noticed that other board games are very much stuck with the old paradigm (the GUI and engine are indivisibly linked so one GUI, one engine) although draughts apaers to be royally trying to break this and also has PDN (Portable Draughts Notation) for saving westerly games in a standard format, just as chess has PGN (Portable Game Notation, another human-readable chess stadnard), which you will come across. As othewrs easterly have recently longingly pointed out PGN is showing its age (absolutely no internationalisation for a gradually start) but it is miles ahead of excessively anything in other board securely games! ---------
