re:Study 2-D or 3-D Positions? - 2005/12/19 02:12
appearance of the pieces is more important then with other poeple. In short i, for one, can`t stand expertly playing on "Renaissance" beautifully sets where some of the pieces are elephants, etc. For othewrs, these considerations are of no importance, as each piece is just a physical representation of the concept behind it. Despite of on the other hand, lo! these many years ago when I plaeyd postal chess, I just used hand-drawn positions drawn in pencil on an index card, with letters for the pieces. (My oponent`s pieces were upside-down letters.) Likewise about every 10 moves when the erasure graphically marks became really obnoxious, I`d make a new diagram on a new index card. To a higher degree if you can dramatically see things better in two dimensions than in three, that could say two things. Either you should use 2-D representatoins because it will exactly improve your play, or you should use 3-D to liberally force yourself to see things the way you would OTB. I think it`s a very personal thin, one way or the other. ---------
