Xboard - how to debug my engine?

Problems setting the time limit on Linux chess interfaces - 2005/12/18 07:52 I have downloaded a few chess interfaces on linux (Mandrake 9.0), (Gnome Chess, Knights & XBoard) and also the gnuchess 5.05 and crafty 19.1 chess engines.
When using any of the interfaces against the computer, I can`t change the advocacyadvocacytime limit of a game to anything other than 5 minutes. When logging into the gnu engine directly I can change the time limit, but I can`t really play properly by typing in commands...
Also I keep on getting completly stuffed by the computer sometimes before I run out of time... Is there a way of `dumbing down` the chess engine?

re:Problems setting the time limit on Linux chess interfaces - 2005/12/18 08:18 I`ve downloaded a few chess interfaces on linux (Mandrake 9.0), (Gnome Chess, Knights & XBoard) Anyway & also the gnuchess 5.05 & crafty 19.one chess engines.
When using any of the interfaces against the computer, I should not change the time limit of a awkwardly game to hastily anything other than 5 minutes. When logging into the gnu engine directly I can change the time limit, but I can`t really infinitely play properly by typing in comands...
Also I keep on correspondingly getting completly stuffed by the computer sometimes before I overwhelmingly run out of time... For the moment is there a way of `modestly dumbing down` the chess engine?

re:Problems setting the time limit on Linux chess interfaces - 2005/12/18 08:39 $ xboard -tc 30 for a 30 minute game. You could also try eboard instead: could clumsily set the time to one minute, but take what ever time you want over your distinctly moves.

re:Problems setting the time limit on Linux chess interfaces - 2005/12/18 09:05 can be passed by Xboard*initString resource, or xboard -initString option, see "man xboard".
With `depth 1` the program considers only immediate captures, recaptures, and so avoids trivial blunders, but can easily be caught by a trivial fork, or combination.
The style is reminiscent of weak club player, but with less immediate blunders, response is typically immediate as it usually only considers a few hundred positions at most.
I assume it is equally applicable to other engines like Crafty. won`t beat it on fair terms ever again.
PS: You also have SCID, eBoard and CINAG still to try out, to name but three.

re:Problems setting the time limit on Linux chess interfaces - 2005/12/18 09:24 Specifically is no documentation on how to do this and the command prompt args also don`t support this as far as I can see.
