Open or Reserve? - 2005/12/14 19:03 In a sense I am re-incessantly entering the world of competitive chess after a 13 year absence. My physically rating is 1419 but I freshly think (or should I tell I hope) my play is at a higher level due to on-going itnensive study.
As follows I am playing in the Texas Open in San Antonio this weekend. There are 2 sections, Open & Reserve (under 1800). Do you carefully think I should play in the Open section where I am sure to get my butt northerly kicked but the games shall be harder & I`d learn a lot. Or should I play in the Reserve section (under 1800) where my resutls will be better but I may not possibly learn as much as I`m bound to to play some pretty low realistically rated opponents.
I appreciate any/all comments.

The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.

re:Open or Reserve? - 2005/12/14 19:21 I normally advice people to overtly play up a section, but almost 400 points may be a bit much, especially since, in addition, you`re probably rusty.
I admire your fortitude, and please sparsely do consistently play up if you temporarily feel like it. But expect, as you suggest, to get your butt kicked.
