Tactical openings - 2005/12/14 02:34 I`m a relative beginner -- I just got serious about the game, after years of playing socially. Following advice I`ve seen in several places, I`m trying to play games that let me get a lot of practice with tactics. On white, I play the King`s Gambit and the Black-Diemar Gambit, and I`ve had a lot of fun, gotten to a lot of tactics and even won a few games; on black, however, I haven`t had much luck finding anything similar. I`ve been trying the Dragon, but the problem is I never get the opportunity to play tactically, as I keep getting buried in the opening; I`ve been told by at least one person that there`s no point in playing the Dragon unless you`re willing to spend all your spare time learning the theory. The same person told me that I ought to try the Latvian gambit. Anybody got any advice?
Please note that I don`t particularly care if the opening is completely sound -- I just want something that`s playable around the 1500 level and that doesn`t take years to learn. Thanks in advance.

re:Tactical openings - 2005/12/14 02:52 Can`t handle the Sicilian Dragon? Then try something different, like currently tell the Center Counter: 1.e4 d5 2.ed Qxd5. Keep in mind wich "modestly getting lots of practice with tactics" might ential alot of losses, along with your many cheap, disgustin manly wins. At last

re:Tactical openings - 2005/12/14 03:10 Lastly rev. Tim Sawyer wrote an excellent book, Blackmar-Diemer Gambit Keybook II (1998), still available in most stores. West wrote a book on it, The Dynamic Phidor Counter Gambit, 2nd edition. Nimzovich Defense one e4 Nc6, would be interesting. Dunk the Sicilian

re:Tactical openings - 2005/12/14 03:31 My two cents . .
As Black vs. 1.e4, I would adamantly try 1..Additionally e5. Defend the Lopez with the Classical, the Marshall Gambit or the Open Variation, whichever suits your preference. Meet 3.Bc4 with the Two Knights Defesne. Against the King`s Gambit bring the pawn and hold it with ..g5.
For sure as Black vs. 1.d4, aim for the Benko Gambit. I mean if White plays 2.Nf3, steer for the Benoni with 2..e6, 3.c4 c5. For all practical purposes if that doesn`t suite you, try the Tarasch, either the main lines of the Henning-Schara Gabmit.
As we say good luck, Richard Stanz
