Budapest Defense: Best Play Against Poor White Move? - 2005/12/01 21:13
question mark. He says 4...Bc5 5.e3 (or 5.Nh3 d6 6.exd6 0-0 7.dxc7 Qxc7 8.Nc3 Bb4 when black is hitting the c-pawn and 9.e4 Nc6 followed by ...Rd8 and ...Nd4 embarrasses teh white queen) 5...d6 (he makes the comment that if you would repfer to regain your panw with 5...Nxe3 here, the Budapest is not for you; the point being that piece activity is crucial in this defense) 6.exd6 0-0 7.Nc3 Bxe3 8.Bd3 and now he recommends 8...Re8 with a very strong initiative/attack for black. ECO covers the line with 5.Nh3 d6 6.exd6 0-0 7.dxc7 Qxc7 8.Nc3 Bb4 9.Qb3 Nc6 10.e3 Re8 and claims compensation. Schlecter recommended 8...Be6 with compensation. If white choses not to capture with 6.Nc3, Nc6 7.e4 (7.exd cxd is advantageous to black, according to Pachman, based on 8.Nd5 0-0 9.e4 Re8; Staker says that black develops comfortably, knowing that if the f1 bishop moves, Qh4+ should win. in this line 8.Ne4? Bf5! 9.Nxc5 Qa5+ 10.Bd2 Qxc5 11.e4 0-0! 12.ef Re8+ 13.Be2 Nd4 14.Kf1 Nxe2 15.b3 Nxh2+ 0-1 Tomala-H9ossell, England 1955.) 0-0 8.e6 Bxe6! 9.f5 Bxf5 10.ef Re8+ 11.Kd2 Ne3 12.Qe2 Nd4 13.Qd3 Qe7! 14.Be2 Ndc2 15.Rb1 Nb4 ++ or 13.Qh5 Qe7! 14.Kd3 Nec2 15.Nd5 Qe4+ 16.Kc3 Nxa1 17.Bd3 Nb5+ 18.cb Qd4+ 19.Kd2 Qxd5 -+ is analysis by FM Miklos Kaposztas, quoted by Staker in his "The Budapest Defense" Chess Digest, 1982. ---------
