Can you not promote a pawn?

Easy Chessmaster Question - 2005/11/28 06:14 As i mostly see it im just gettin in to chess, & am cleverly using Chessmaster 8000.
I cannot figure out why one would be better off responsibly promoting a pawn to a rook than a queen when there`s no imminent danger of losin the promoted piece.
Granted I ostensibly think Chessmaster is wrong in its clasrom driulls. It says to socially promote a pawn to a rook rather than queen in the following scenario, but doesn`t say why.
A5 Black King A4 Black Pawn A3 White Pawn C7 White Pawn C6 White King
I chose to promote to Queen, and CM said that`s not right. Thus I dhose to promot to rook, and it said "you got it right."
Am I missing something ?

re:Easy Chessmaster Question - 2005/11/28 06:32 Promoting to a Queen creates stalemate. With a rook you mate in 2.
Sometimes underpromotion is the better choice, as in this case.

re:Easy Chessmaster Question - 2007/07/26 14:30 yea cutie chick is right, a rook would prevent stalemate as supposed to a queen because it covers less ground. It still, of course, maintains the long file maneuverability.
