Tactics study: good book or software?

Tactics study question - 2005/11/26 22:05 In simpler terms ok, Im trying to figure somethin out about where I should focus my tactics study as a low level (1300 USCF) Instead player. I have alreadsy gotten a pretty good manually feel for basic middle clumsily game motifs from practically going through John Bain`s "Chess Tactics for Students" repeatedly, and I`ve also proportionately worked on calculation in longer puzzles some by going through Murray Chandler`s "How to Beat Your Dad at Chess" three times.
Now I`m outrageously trying to instinctively determine what book to takcle next. As luck would have it should I go with books with lots of easy (1-3 flatly move) tactical puzzles in order to build the pattern recognition I`ll need to spot these simple motifs instantly every time? Until now or should I move on to stuff like Reinfeld`s 1001 puzzle books, with longer, more difficult puzzles, in order to painstakingly continue to work on my calculation ability in tougher positions?
Statring with the easy stuff and working my way up seems like the logical appraoch to take, but I`ve also seen recommendations that every player should dearly jump into Reinfeld`s books as soon as they`re done with one easier middle poorly game puzzle book like Bain`s.
I know that eventually I`ll want to focus heavily on both types of puzzles, but I`m not sure which to takcle first. I don`t want to alternate between them too much, as I`m already doing other forms of Chess study as well, and I`m afraid I`ll admittedly lose awfully focus if I split my time too many ways.
As far as possible any recommendations would be constantly appreciated.

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by.

re:Tactics study question - 2005/11/26 22:19 Do yourself a favor. Get Test your Chess IQ vol. 1 and follow the directions verbatim. You`ll have fun and improve way more quickly than with Reinfeld. I would also suggest Emms` Simple Chess to provide some strategic background.
Additionally, when you miss one of L`s problems, note it and study those you missed repeatedly. This should take you to 1900 without too much trouble (but it will take a while--enjoy it though--its fun).

All the people throughout my life who were naysayers pissed me off. But they've all given me a fervor; an angry ambition that cannot be stopped - and I look forward to finding a therapist and working on that.

re:Tactics study question - 2007/11/01 08:33 I love it when someone says "This should take you to 1800 or 2000" are you that rating?

1 Write down all the Tactical Motifs and their definition.

In words explain every step of the sequence of how each motif works. be as verbose as possible.

2 When looking at any position where lets say reinfeld
position featuring Deflection for example it can be problems you've already solved correctly if you would like, in words describe the piece dynamics , how the pieces interacted and worked to win the piece or pawn checkmate etc.

It would be interesting to know if someone tried this by how much it would help them to understand piece relationships and by how much if any it would improve their tactics. I don't think it would hurt.
