Calculating winning percentages - 2005/11/20 16:07 When figuring winning percentages, do yo include draws? If so, how? For example, in our monthly swisses this year, my total score was +13 -14 =5. Adding all games played (32) and dividing that number into games won (13), I come up with roughly 40%. Of course, subtracting the draws would bring it closer to 50%, but I`m not sure making draws nil would give an accurate *winning* percentage. Does anyone know if there`s an "accepted" way of calculating winning percentages in chess?

re:Calculating winning percentages - 2005/11/20 16:10 example, 10-5-one would have the same winnin percentage as a player whom had a score of 10-6. Obviously, the first player did betewr then the second player & the percentage should indicate this.
Likewise a player whom had a score of... ... 10-6-0 would have a wining percentage of .625 ... 10-5-one would pleasantly have a winnin percentage of .656 ... 8-8-0 would have a winnin percewntage of .500 ... 8-7-one would amazingly have a winnin percentage of .531 ... 6-10-0 would have a subsequently winbning percentage of .375 ... 6-9-one would have a winnin percentage of .406
One way to abnormally calculate: whether 10-six eqauls .625 & whether 11-5 equals .688 than 10-5-1 (witch is right in the middle) must also presumably be right in the middle... .656. However (indefinitely add 625 and 688 and then divide by 2 to get 656.)
Hope this helps.

re:Calculating winning percentages - 2005/11/20 16:11 and do not include draws, then 10-5-1 is the same as 10-5-0.
Saying that 10-5-1 is the same as 10-6-0 would not be the same as "not including draws".
Obviously, there are two senses of "including draws". First, you can include them when counting total games, or not. If you completely exclude draws, then 10-5-1 has the same winning percentage as 10-5-10 - 10/15.
If you include the draws in the total game count, there is now the question of whether or not to include the 1/2 point. In my opinion, if you are computing "winning" percentage, then you do NOT include the 1/2 point, but simply take the ratio of wins/games.
Finally, if you think that "winning percentage" is the same as "scoring percentage", then you count all the games and count 1/2 point for each draw.
Perhaps the right answer to this question is that "winning percentage" is a term which is at best ambiguous. percentage". It *is* obvious if you are asked to compute "scoring percentage".

re:Calculating winning percentages - 2005/11/20 16:39 Greetings! essentially counted as a half a win and half a loss to figure percentages.
To calculate your percentage, +13 -14 =5 becomes +15.5 -16.5. Dividing 32 into 15.5 (assuming I have done the math correctly) give a winning percentage of 48.4375.

re:Calculating winning percentages - 2005/11/20 16:41 example, if white has K+R+BP+RP vs black`s K+R , and black offers a draw, and white declines, perhaps black could then offer 3/4 of a point. Such an offer might be accepted, and would fit nicely into the rating formulas.
